I ordered an TGI built AMD-65 from Centerfiresystems this weekend (I'll let you guys know how it looks when it arrives). I do know that the gun requires 2 magazine parts to be US made to remain 922r compliant. I'm thus planning to try to replace the floorplate and follower in some surplus mags. This seems like it will be no problem for the bakelite mags, but I'm wondering about the steel surplus mags. I've been getting my floorplates and followers from K-Var but the website states the floorplates are incompatible with the surplus steel mags...is this true?

How do you other AMD-65 owners stay 922r compliant (what a dumb law ) while using steel mags? Is there a different source for floorplates which will fit the steel mags?

Many thanks!

As long as you did not "assemble" it and Centerfiresystems or Century did you don't have to worry about 922r.

18 USC 922r applies to assembly not possession. Don't fiddle with or "assemble" mags and you are fine.

(r) It shall be unlawful for any person to assemble from imported parts any semiautomatic rifle or any shotgun which is identical to any rifle or shotgun prohibited from importation under section 925 (d)(3) of this chapter as not being particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes except that this subsection shall not apply to—
(1) the assembly of any such rifle or shotgun for sale or distribution by a licensed manufacturer to the United States or any department or agency thereof or to any State or any department, agency, or political subdivision thereof; or
(2) the assembly of any such rifle or shotgun for the purposes of testing or experimentation authorized by the Attorney General.

I did not know that. I always assumed that BATFE would make the case that by putting a mag in the rifle (not the mag that comes with the rifle), I had assembled and thus was breaking the law. I wouldn't want to make a mistake and find myself in a heap of trouble.

It's an interesting letter Sebastian but I don't think they really answered our question completely. They never specifically addressed whether or not removing and inserting a magazine constituted assembly. I also note that the letter specified that you have to use the "original parts" which would presumably be ones that you bought with the gun.

Unfortunately it's a lawyer's answer, which means it's 100% accurate, and almost completely useless for this discussion because the BATFE left holes in their explanations that they might be able to exploit later. :banghead:
