I thought Springfield imported almost all their models. The XDs are made in Croatia, and the non-performance shop stiff is made in Brazil by Imbrel.

Doesn't Heritage by from an Italian maker?

Mike

Cimmaron does and Springfield imports major portions of even their custom product but it's controlled locally.

Heritage says "made in the USA" on their web site.

Not all guns are USA-made, even if the manufacturer is US-Based.
The STI Spartan is essentially made in the Philippines and the Remington SPR shotguns are Turkish, IIRC.

But what of foreign companies that manufacture here? Walther, FN, Beretta... should I refuse to buy a USA-made Beretta 92 even though I am employing American factory workers? While the profit may head back to Italy, it's good to keep an American working.

While the sentiment is nice, the reality is complicated.

The fact that we live in a World Economy is not just a cliche. It's difficult to find products that are exclusively made in any one country.

Where did the raw materials come from? Are the grips made in the same place as the sights, springs, and magazine? Probably not.

Anything that fits in your pocket was probably made in the US, thanks to GCA '68.

I was just thinking that of all the non-military innovations of the last 50 years, the only I can name that came from the US all deal with making compact pistols.

If US companies aren't doing something in particular, and the country in question doesn't smother puppies, then I'll buy from them. It's not like we can't do this stuff - the foreign companies are under greater restriction than US companies, right?

Some small guns not made in the US:
Glock 26 (Austria)
Makarov (East Germany, Russia, Bulgaria)
Springfield XD Subcompact (Croatia)
Any Taurus snub or sub-compact (Brazil)

Don't forget Hi-Point.

But what of foreign companies that manufacture here? Walther,
Actually, Walther has no manufacturing capacity in the US. The SW99 had a Walther made frame (in Germany) and a SW made slide and barrel.
I wish Walther would open a factory here in the US, I would certainly consider applying for a job.

It is a "world economy" but I will buy American when I can or have the choice. I own a CZ 452 American in LH because Remington no longer made a LH 22 nor did any of it's quality at a reasonable price. It is a fine gun no complaints at all I really like it, but if given a choice especially for guns it's American for me.

The PPK/S with a longer frame for one additional cartridge, and the PPK are now produced in the USA under license by Smith & Wesson.

My fault for not articulating myself correctly. So, is the PPK an American gun or a German gun?

Glock 26 (Austria)

Springfield XD Subcompact (Croatia)
Any Taurus snub or sub-compact (Brazil)

Those still meet the minimum size requirement. I believe it was the PPK that had to be enlarged a bit to meet importation requirements.

Some small guns not made in the US:

Those are all subcompacts, not pocket pistols. Even the PPK became the PPK/S in '68, because there's an outright ban on pistols under a certain size, and they had to add a couple millimeters (yes, millimeters!).
The Taurus is pocketed sometimes, but it's on the huge side of pocket pistols, along with the G26.
Glock probably doesn't go smaller than the G26 because as a foreign company they can not legally sell pistols the size of a Kel-Tec PF9 or a Kahr PM9 in the US.
