This concerns ammo supply, or should I say my concern for ammo supply. Am I paranoid? My girl back home said she couldn't get any .40 s&w for herself, anywhere. She checked 5 different stores, and she is saying the same thing about .380, and 9mm. Did I F-up when I didn't stock up before I deployed. Will this situation improve? Should I even be worrying? I'm new to THR as far as posting threads, but every gun I've bought was bought after first consulting the opinions of you guys first.

There are several reasons for the current shortage. Part of it is panic... people are worried about a Democratic president and the ailing economy. Both of these things historically cause people to stock up on ammunition. However, Obama has signaled that he isn't too interested in getting into the gun debate this year... he saw what happened to the Democrats in 1994 after the so-called "assault weapons ban" was passed by their party.

The other thing at work pertains specifically to .380 ACP. Apparently, the machines that make .380 are also used to make 9MM. Contractual obligations have several big manufacturers making 9MM only. One more thing: several .380 handguns have suddenly become very popular, driving up the demand. It could take a year or two for the .380 supply problem to fully work itself out.

In summary, there's no reason to worry. Conserve ammo, learn to reload, remain calm, and wait for the market to correct itself. :)

Oh, and thank you so much for serving your country and defending our freedoms. I pray every day for you and your brothers in Iraq. God bless you and keep you safe, brother.

Ammo is scarce. When it does show up, it doesn't last long on the shelves. It'll get back to normal when all of the anxiety attacks pass and they all stop hyperventilating.

Keep your head down. Come home in one piece!

Welcome to the High Road, thanks for serving.

Things are starting to calm down where I live. There is ammo on the shelves, including 9mm and .40. Even some rifle primers.

The panic seems to be ending.

I am not seeing the panic ending in the Dallas area. I've been to several Wal Marts, Academys, and Dick's Sporting Goods, and pistol ammo is miniscle to just plain out.

I haven't seen any reprieve at all in the SE Pennsylvania area. Every time the local gun shop gets a shipment in it is gone in a matter of hours. Most of the shops around have limited the number of boxes an individual can buy at this point. Here's hoping for a full supply chain in the near future.

I just want to thank every one of you for your informative answers. My Gal just emailed me that she had found some .45, .40, 9mm, so at least I'll have something to shoot when I get home. She also enjoys shooting, and has carried for quite a few years. Everything you guys said makes sense, Thanks again. And thanks too for the words of encouragement and making this country worth fighting for.

Thanks for your service. If you were from N. Florida, I'd take you shooting, .40 on me for a day. Have her order some from a gunshop well before you get home and make sure they don't gouge you too hard. My local shop has been very cool about the whole thing and even lowered the price of transfers because of the bad economy. We need more like them in the industry for sure.

Thanks for the link, 7 For Sure. Floridaguntrader has an interesting site, which had an interesting link to Texasguntrader, which is where I'm stationed out of. Lots of interesting stuff on there. Thanks for the heads up. I have a XD sub in .40 which I love shooting, it's accurate, but it's pretty bulking for a sub. It's a good gun that I'd say ranks real close to my Gals Glock 27. Thanks again.

i honestly dont think its going to let up for a while im in Delaware and the only handgun ammo available here seems to be .40
i havent seen 9mm or .45ACP in a while and anything in between is hit or miss and thats mostly miss unless you morgage your house
ive been looking for .45Colt for months and nothing under 45 a box
if i can find it at all

i feel i should have spent alot more of my funds on ammo before the election

I'm not what you would call politically savy, I hate being lied to, so I stay on the fringes of politics. Am I right to feel that Obama would be nuts to restrict anything firearms related? My guess is taxes will be the part that gets us. As soon as the availabilty and price get back to somewhat normal we'll be so grateful that a 50% percent tax or more, to "save our country" won't seem all that bad. We'll see what happens.

No sign of the shortage easing on the retail end of things. Occasionally, somebody in one of the used 'for sale' rags unloads a case or three of ammo. Best bet is learn to reload. I'm hunting for a .357 sig. and so far I have over 500 cases (some found, some traded for), primers (from my dad who's out of reloading now) dies (direct from RCBS) and bullets (silvertips from Winchester). Total cost for me is about 38 cents a round. Sure beats retail and I can load whenever I want more.

Reload. Such an investment in the future, but right you are. It'll be something I look into. I've got this and another deployment ahead of me, so I'm looking at at least 2 yrs before I could sit down and learn how to do this. Any suggestions on reading material I can get started on?

First suggestion would be browsing through the threads on the reloading subforum of this site. The internet is a gold mine of real world info that none of the printed books can touch.

I'd also start collecting equipment. You do have time offs from deployment, right? It doesn't take much equipment or time to reload a few rounds. Wander out to your local ranges, either civie or military and pick up as many of those .40 cases as you can find. Wait for a sale and grab a pound or two of Bullseye or Unique powder, and some of the small pistol primers. A used RCBS single stage press can often be grabbed for eighty bucks or less. Used dies for a .40 can be found for twenty bucks or under. That's the basics of what you need to reload. Find a sturdy bench or a workmate (which is what I use) and go to loading. Keep it simple to begin with, and after a few thousand rounds you'll know what you want to grow into.

I'm gonna take your advice. I do pretty well with meticulous hobbies, and this one seems like it could benefit me in more ways than one. And so my education begins. This should be interesting, and to say the least I'm excited.

i suggest going online. There might be a back order from some places but you will eventually get your ammo. Better than not getting it at all!

Also, thank you for your service :D

Thanks for the ideas and the info. I'm gonna do my research, and see what I can come up with. I've got 8 more months in Iraq. I figure I can come up with the goods and have them waiting for me when I get home. The toughest part of coming home from here is finding productive things to do that hold my interest. I've developed a love for guns so I can see loading and reloading also becoming a labor of love. And by the way, I truly appreciate the appreciation. I just got back from a 9 hour mounted and dismounted patrol. Trading replies on here is a great stress reliever. Since my wakeup is 5hrs from now, this'll be my last reply.

If you haven't already started reloading, it's a little late now.

Dies, bullets, primers & powder are in very short supply, and back-ordered most places. About as hard to get them as it is to get ammo right now.

I take it those suggesting reloading either do not do so, have not tried to buy component recently or have much betters sources for them than some of us. Components are as hard or harder to find than ammo around these parts. Primers specifically are nowhere to be found right now.

The best bet for ammo that isn't priced sky high is to be there when they are putting it on the shelf. It will be interesting to see how long this panic last and what prices look like in the wake of it.

it truely is hopeless ammos gone reloading suplies are gone and almost all "evil arms" are gone

13 Bravo,I note you are at Ft. Hood. Are you with the 4th Inf Div? I thank you for your service and duty. Byron 11 Bravo,4th Inf 68-69

For reloading, the problem will be finding primers. You might want to see if any of your military connections can get you hooked up with primers...any primers. Then start looking into reloading equipment. All the equipment in the world will do no good unless you have primers.

Psssst .... there ain't no reloading supplies either (primers, powder, bullets, dies) .... and no one knows when/if there will be any more.

In summary, there's no reason to worry. Conserve ammo, learn to reload, remain calm, and wait for the market to correct itself. :)
