ammo consolidation

Due to curent events, I'm considering narrowing down to just a few ammo calibers. Obviously this will limit funtionality of guns, but I don't really hunt, so I'm wondering your opinions on having maybe as few as one or two caliber weapons. I like 45 acp but I mostly target shoot, plink, and for HD situations. Do any of you consider this viable option?

Yes, but not so much due to current events. In handguns I currently own .22LR, .38/.357 Mag and 9mm. I have almost 1000 rounds of .45ACP, half FMJ and half JHP. I'd like to have a .45 again, but having trouble justifying. I'll figure out how one of these days.

Im sticking with a big box of one caliber for this, one ammo for that and another box for something else over there.

Any more than that will confuse, befuddle and make me unsafe when Im trying to stuff something that goes bang into the wrong weapon.

A point can be made to "get one of everything," since you'd then be able to use anything you come across.

However, it's hard to stock up "enough" ammo in odd calibers unless you're wealthy or planned ahead and bought a little bit here and there until you had "enough."

It's also difficult to predict which gun/caliber you might chane upon. If you really, really need some, it'll be harder to find.

A better case can be made for limiting the different calibers.

Then again, Walmart's been out of 9mm for more than a few weeks. They're even out of .380, .38 spl and .357, calibers usually thought to be common and plentiful.

Unless I could sell my odd calibers to upgrade to something better, I'd hang onto them.

I can make a great many calibers go bang as far as pistols are concerned, and a few rifle calibers as well. I have "put back for a rainy day" ammo, and practice/plinking ammo.

If I can get a pistol, I can probably make it go bang. If I can find some ammo, I probably have a pistol that shoots it. Rifle not so much, but not bad either.

I always believed that ammo should be cheap and easy to procure, in good times or bad.

That's why I've only limited my calibers to the most commonly available, like .22LR, .38 spl, .357 mag, 9mm, .45acp, 30-06 and 7.62 x 39.

Last year, I trimmed those to .22LR, .38spl/357mag, 7.62 x 39 and added more pieces in these calibers to the gun collection.

As well, built up my stock of .22LR, 7.62 x 39 and .38/.357 reloading components.

*And* diversify. Problem solved.

At least, that's my approach. But I have the benefit of having been at this for a long time, and acquiring this or that when the opportunity presented itself.

Still, one thing no one should be without is a .22 pistol & rifle and a couple thousand rounds of ammo on hand. Always fun, usually cheap, and will keep your skills sharp (and/or put food on the table).
