Hey all,

I've never really taken 7.62x39 seriously as a hunting round, but recently got myself a Ruger American Ranch for the purpose of hunting hogs, among other things. This rifle has turned out to be a real shooter, even with steel cased ammo, printing sub MOA groups of 5.

One of the reasons I went with this caliber is that it's economical. I'm not jumping on the $2+ per round bandwagon. Anyway, what I'm considering stocking up on is the PPU soft points, which seems like a deal at .70 a round.

There are two flavors. Pointed soft points and round nose soft points. Has anyone used either or both? Any comments?

Thanks.

I have used the PPU ammo for years in my 7.62x39 ar and bolt rifles. Very accurate with either the sp or rn. Have reloaded the brass several times with no problems years ago. It is a great buy and maybe the Belom etc????

Thank you. I was also wondering if one is much more effective than the other as well.

Ppu brass case 7.62x39 was the only ammo that would run reliably in my AR 7.62x39. It was my deer rifle for several seasons running both ppu varieties you mentioned and when using it never once did I have to track a deer after shot. They was always either right where they was standing or within eyeshot of where they was standing. Shots were from 40 yards to around 150 yards.

Thank you. That's what I'm looking for. I think I'm gonna go with the pointed soft points. They have a higher BC and according to Strelok, they fly a good bit flatter.

I think you will find the soft points are more available. But buy what you can, both take deer with no problem.

Here is a gel test review of the round nose. I couldn't find one of the PSP. I handload so I have not used either, but if your hunting is generally short range like 100 yards and less I would use the round nose. If you expect to be shooting 100-200 then I would use the pointed soft point.

When I had a bolt action 7.62x39mm, (CZ 527M), I loaded 129gr NOE cast and powdercoated bullets with great effect, but I don't know how well they would have worked as hunting rounds.

Enjoy your new 7.62×39. I think you made a good choice with the PPU.
You may want to buy a box or two of Tula steel case for fun. They are normally loaded with FMJ'S.

Yeah, like many, I have ammo cans full of 7.62x39 from back when it was so cheap, it was almost stupid not to buy it. Still, for some reason, I just didn't enjoy shooting it out of an AR, so it just sat there. I had enough of it to justify buying the rifle just to see if all of the hype was true, regarding the accuracy of the Ranch with cheap ammo. To my surprise, the hype was true. I really can't say enough good things about this rifle.

I've also ordered the AR magwell from Ruger. If what I've seen on YouTube is true, I'm gonna be able to run the rifle with all of the Duramags I got for the AR.
