I recently bought a M1 Garand and was at the range. I was told not to use the rem core lokt 180 gr. ammo I brought because it could damage the operating rod. My question is ...is it safe to use it or should I be more selective on what I use

Could damage the OP rod. You need to be careful with modern ammo. There are some manufacturers that do make ammo for the Garand and are marked on the box like American Eagle. You can buy from CMP at a very reasonable price. Last time I looked it was just under $100 + shipping for 200 rounds fmj non corrosive.

Or option B is to put a different gas plug in so you can shoot modern ammo. I have different gas plugs in two of mine so I can shoot modern ammo and then I don't have to worry about it.

Greetings,

I'm new to this forum but have owned a CMP Garand for many years and love it.
It's true that shooting the wrong ammo can potentially damage the op rod and hammer the gun in general.
That being said, as mentioned above, you can get an adj. gas plug and safely shoot regular 30-06 ammo. Here's what I use: http://tinyurl.com/6qu7oyk
That's a link to Brownell's. I like it because even with M2 ball, I can make the gun be a single shot rifle with having to pull the bolt back each time to cycle the action when shooting off a rest. My spent brass doesn't go in to a ballistic orbit and is easily policed. Nice since I re-load it and like to keep as much of it as I can.
Take care and enjoy your Garand. I sure do enjoy mine.

many many years ago I had decided to shoot my fathers M1 international harvester garand, took it to the range after buying commercial 30-06......blew the whole gas cylinder strait off the rifle and bent the op rod. im just lucky it didnt crack the receiver

one of these days I need to take it to a smith that knows garands and have him fix it. the threads on the barrel seem fine but the threads on the cylinder lock look nearly stripped.

Thanks

Thanks for a link to that site. I wish I'd seen that brfore I bought the plug I'm currently using. Oh well. I just took a quick look at that site but it appears to have some useful stuff.

Keep it in your mind for your next Garand.
