I picked up a very nice condition M1 Garand and a Springfield 1903 yesterday in a trade along with couple hundred rounds of some Norweigan ammo on MG belt. I know nothing about these rifles but always wanted one from watching WWII movies growing up.

The Springfield 1903 is pretty strait forward as far as operation goes... a bolt action rifle but the Garand is a little more complicated as it's a gas operated.

The question I have is about ammo.

Is the Norweigan ammo I got safe to use in the Garand?
Are normal commercial hunting ammo I see at local sporting goods store okay to use in the Garand?

Where can I get more "GI" ammo?

Finally is there a good forum for M1 Garand owners/shooters?

Thanks.

Don't know about the Norweigan ammo being safe, but the M1 Garand was designed to work around a certain gas pressure. Commercial hunting ammo is usually NOT safe to shoot in the M1 Garand. Some manufacturers have begun making ammo that is safe to shoot in a Garand.

Can I assume any commercial hunting ammo is okay to shoot in the Springfield M1903? It was built by Remington in 1941.

Any factory .30-06 will be fine in the 1903. For the Garand, stick to military M2 loads or commercial loads made specifically for the Garand (there are a couple of options, both are expensive). Or load your own.

Or get an adjustable gas plug. ;)

The CMP sells surplus greek M2 ball for $96 a a can and its already on the en blocs. Im not sure but I think anybody can buy the ammo.
