Can anyone recommend a place to buy ammo online. I'm spending way too much at the local shops.
I have an 870 Remington 12ga.

Might want to look into reloading depending on what you're shooting (Target loads vs hunting or slug loads). You'll have to order in bulk, especially shot (like a ton or two, really) to get any savings. But you can tailor your loads to your needs and shoot more for the same amount of $$$.
 
Decent Website

I've ordered ammo from www.ammoman.com. Decent prices that all include shipping, so that there's never any other hidden charge. Their website isn't to pretty to look at, but they have a lot to offer.
 
-1 on ammoman, LOTS of bad stories floating around here and arfcom.
I've not had any personal experience, but where there's smoke.....

Anyway, reloading, even without bulk can seriously save you some money esp. if you shoot a lot.
Sportsman Warehouse is pretty darn cheap on reloading supplies.

The problem with ammo online (esp shotgun ammo) is it's so darn heavy that shipping just kills you, esp in quantity volumes needed for clays.
For speciality stuff it's ok.

Agreed. Online ammo shopping is a last resort.
 
Concur on the -1 for ammoman. When a website tosses an paying advertiser then says alot to me (never dealt with ammoman but I did read the thread on arfcom.)

Yep, the shipping costs eat up any savings over buying local and reloading. Unless your buying speciality ammo or a truckload of regular.
 
Reload- been out of it for several years but moved so i can now hunt waterfowl again w/my 24 yr old son. We are reloading bismuth and are very impressed would just like to purchase it cheaper
 
Try Bass Pro Shops online. Near WalMart prices and cheap shipping - just $13 for 40 boxes of 20 ga on my last order
 
Big sporting goods stores, like Dick's Sporting Goods, and Wal-Mart (if your still sells ammo) often have fair deals on ammo, especially when its on sale.
 
For a site that sends out three emails a day boasting about how it's updated in real-time, Ammoman always seems to be fresh out of everything I want (even though it's not listed as OOS on the site) :rolleyes:

Probably for the best, anyway. I haven't had any personal experience with them but yes, I've seen plenty of horror stories about them.
 
by-the-box order for premium stuff that i shoot <50 rounds a year of are worth ordering from cabelas or midway or whoever, might save $5 on a box versus retail. i shoot cheap stuff out of my deer rifles when i'm plinking, and then re-zero and practice with a box or two of premium stuff leading up to the season.

surplus is also generally cheap enough that the shipping won't ruin the deal.

other than that, you're hard-pressed to save more than a token amount on ammo. occasionally you find a good deal on a whole case of WWB or wolf or something on the low-end that works out to less than it would elsewhere, but for the most part i'm with a lot of the others that you need to tie up a pretty good chunk of change in ammo if you want to be getting a good deal.

Dicks came in to Indianapolis and dicked Galyans, then bought them for a song, then got rid of all the evil handguns and most of the ammo and several of the employees that sold firearms. Even without their predation of a local business their handgun policy, lack of shooting supplies, poor prices and very poor customer service would cause me to not recommend them.

Gander came in and sells more guns and ammo than Galyans, are pleasant to do business with and even carry S&W EBRs now. So far I've bought two handguns there, quite a bit of ammo and a very nice range bag.

I have used sportsmansguide because they had good deals on 16g shells. But in the end, if I had just waited till Dicks put on one of their sales, I would have saved about $30. Which I did about a month after my sportsmans guide order arrived.... I can never have enough 16g shells laying around.

It seems that ammoman has a bad rep. I live near his warehouse now, so I go pickup what I want. He had some Speer 12g last spring. I picked up two flats for $70. The stuff is great for clay shooting.

My advice is wait for sales at big box stores if you need hundreds of rounds. Otherwise please shop small local stores if you have them. Here in NJ, most small gun shops are gone and my only avenue is the big box stores. Also, always check with your range operator if they have any deals on large quantities of shells. Often they will pass on dealer pricing + % to a customer.
 
I've been ordering from ammoman.com (just ammo) for years and never had one molecule of a problem. Obviously some folks have, I'm not one of them.

I am picky about buying online and only get what I know and want at good prices that include shipping. Sales happen all over from time to time and I like to take advantage of them when i find them by buying in case lots. I have ordered online from Outdoorsuperstore, CDNN, Wholesale Hunter and a few other places with no problems. Some places want a drivers license to establish the age of their customers- no complaints from me on that, they have my name and address already anyway so they can deliver.

From the looks of things, ammo is going to do nothing except get more expensive for certain and likely harder to get as well- my advice FWIW is, stock up now...

An online source to add to the reliable list: www.natchezss.com. Sometimes the best prices, sometimes not, but usually very competitive. They can hardly be beat for optics and other accessories.

For 30.06, don't forget the good old CMP.
