I was just perusing my favorite on-line ammo retailer tonight...www.sportsmansguide.com. Seems the ammo has gone up about 10% in price. The fiocchi 40 FMJ that I like to practice with is now $93/500, it used to be $83/500. Pretty much every caliber has gone up, from what I was seeing.

I have actualy seen them level out in the last 3 - 4 months
There was a big spike about 5 - 6 months ago but it has nomalised a bit from what i can tell

Its just the various ebb and flow of supply and demand usually. There been some price increases since the world price of copper has gone up, the US dollar isn't worth as much as it used to be, though as long as people don't go into panic buying mode things will eventually normalise.

Sportsmansguide gone to the Frogs(they were sold to a French Company)! They seem to advertise things that are never in stock, and or sold out before the catalog hits your mail box. There have been posts on other boards where SG had canceled a buyer's club membership because the person bought too much ammo?

They also make false claims of effectiveness about junk they're liquidating because the manufacturer's gone (because it was ineffective!).

Don't trust them. I'd found many other places with better deals, anyway.

Good advice

get a reloading press, i got a dillion [sic] 550 and already loaded 200 rounds of 9mm tonight

Spelling and punctuation defects aside, that is very good advice.

IF you shoot a lot and aren't independently wealthy, you will find reloading to be cost-effective and even fun. If you shoot oddball calibers or special loads (like feeding IPSC race guns), reloading is almost a requirement.

Dillon makes excellent equipment and stands behind it. I'm very happy with my 550, which has loaded many rounds in 4 different calibers.

I like the SG company

I for one have never had a problem with Sportsmansguide. I've ordered about 1700 rounds from them this year, no problems. I've always recieved prompt shipment, fast courtious service. The thing I like about SG is they do not require a copy of your drivers license or any type of affadavit. You order your ammo, they ship it, no questions asked.:D Unlike Cheaperthandirt, which requires both. The SG beats cheaperthandirt on prices too, bigtime, their shipping is also cheaper. Personally, I'm not happy with the service I have recieved from cheaperthandirt.

I can buy 40 ammo at the local gun shows here for $70/500. Its a local ammo company in Denver, they load once fired mixed brass, I've shot the stuff and its pretty good.

It could also be due to the US dollar becoming weaker vs most other currencies. This makes everything more expensive for the consumer including commodities required for ammo such as brass (copper, zinc), copper, nickel, etc.

The price increases seem limited to ammuntion that was cheaper to begin with, specifically mil surp or bulk (Fed. American Eagle, Rem. UMC, etc.). Premium ammunition seems stable, as there is plenty of profit margin when one considers the material cost of these rounds vs. the retail price.

This can definitely be attributed (at least in part) to the rising cost of all metals globally.

You want to see a price hikedue to materials? Take a look at tool boxes and tools; since they are all virtually 100% metal, they have been affected drastically. The Mac MB1000 box I have was $4,450 in 2000, today it is $6,900!

How much is too much? Sportsmansguide has deliverd over 10,000 rounds to me in the past two months. Some of it was stuff I backorderd about 10 weeks ago to lock in lower prices.

Average shipping was $20 per 2-3000 rounds, plus I always have a $10 off coupon for each order from the first order to subtract from the shipping. Using their "four-pay" plan let me stock up now and spread the payments over the time I'll be shooting up this ammo.

My most recent order was 2000 rounds of Fiocchi .45ACP 230 gr ball for $171/1000. It was listed for Jan delivery, but came last week. Great deal!

Nobody has been able to beat SG for me the past six months, new frog owners or not!

Cheaper than Dirt has a disclaimer

I got a new Cheaper than Dirt catalogue last week. It had a disclaimer in the ammo section about rising prices. As I recall is said to expect continued increases due to global demand and a shortage due to current events, fear of bird flu, etc.
