Hey guys, I have some general questions. First off today I went into my gun shop and they were getting rid of some back stock of ammo. I picked up some Federal Hi-shok .45acp 180gr JHP's for $7 PER 50. is this a good deal? I am less familliar with the Hi-Shok line of ammo then the Hydra Shoks. At the very least it will be good range ammo.

Second, can someone suggest some good .357 mag hunting ammo? I know that the bear thing has been beat to death, but I have some Black bear concerns, I had a previous post about it. What loads would be good, I am not going looking for trouble, but I would like to have the most effective round possible should something come up. Also I would like a good load for Boar hunting, my buddy wants to go boar hunting and I would like to pack my 6" GP-100 on the trip. This would not be my primary weapon. I have looked at the Corbon rounds but wonder if anything else is better. Thanks for the help Juan.

I would think that 170 gr Speer GD soft points or Fed 180 Cast Cores would both be fine. Well constructed w/plenty of punch. For a few more $$, the new Buffalo Bore .357 mag loads look intriguing.

Federal Classic Hi-Shok ammo is good stuff, and $7 for 50 rounds of .45 ACP JHP is dirt cheap. Shoot, $14 for 50 would be a deal. The .45ACP JHP is a 185 gr. bullet, not 180, and it does about 950-1000 fps from a 5" barrel.

In my opinion the .380 ACP, .38 special+P, 9mm, and .45 ACP Hi-Shoks are very good choices for self defense. I am not familiar with other calibers.

That is indeed a good deal. I'm not really a fan of sub-230-grain .45 rounds, but I'd definitely buy at that price. Hell, that's cheaper than Wally World hardball value packs. Go wild.

"...$7 for a 50 round box of anything by..." That's a good price for any factory ammo. I think you'll find any .357 will be too light for bear or boar. You really have nothing to fear from a healthy fed bear unless it's a sow with cubs or you startle a boar bear. You smell like one thing to a bear. Trouble.
