Ammo selling out fast

I'm set with everything but .40. I picked up a M&P 2.0 Compact chambered in 40 a little while ago that I'm using as a woods gun on vacation this year. I ordered 2000 bullets from RMR (I'll easily shoot 500 rounds in a range session) and out of curiosity checked their supply of 9mm. All their 9's are on back order. 40 was available. Not surprised, and as inexpensive as 40 caliber guns are picking one up for times like this is worth considering, especially if you reload and the cost to do so versus 9's is negligible.

40 S&W is the go to in tough times. I like to keep several on hand.

I was fairly new to shooting when the 2008/Obama panic hit, and like all of you resolved to not get caught short-handed again. So in the intervening years I bought when the budget allowed, shopped sales, got into reloading, etc. I know I'm in good shape this time around. But I still really don't like knowing that I cant just go pick up another 500 rounds RIGHT NOW if I decide I need/want them. Because even if I'm well supplied, I know if I shoot 150 rounds, then I'm "150 rounds less" well supplied. Honestly, I was planning an order of 1-2k more 9mm MPR's from RMR in another month or so and would feel a lot better if I had those on the shelf already... But that will have to wait - the budget is pushed far enough for this month. I'll probably place that order next month, and receive them in another month (or two perhaps, by that point). Worth noting that their prices haven't moved at all through all of this.

Perhaps my current discomfort indicates that I did not, in fact, put enough away after all? I suspect though that no matter how much I have I'll feel that twinge of discomfort in times like this - simple fact is that no matter the size of your stash, it will likely be shrinking rather than growing over the next few months if you shoot at all.

I did buy the last 2 boxes of 9mm HP's from the range when I was there Sunday. I didn't even realize a panic buy was going on - just knew I had just put some factory HP's through my shiny new P365 (to make sure they'd run nicely - they did) and wanted to replace what I'd shot. Was kind of surprised when he informed me I was buying the last of his inventory.

I owe Wal mart a big thank you for encouraging me to stock up on the ammunition they no longer wanted to carry. It's nice to be able to take advantage of those opportunities, but I hope this will also give the LGS a shot in the arm as the gun biz has been pretty slow in recent months.

A friend and his wife own one of the few local shops in my area. I stopped in after work to see if they needed any help/food/drinks. Usually have 60-70 guns in stock. Down to about 7 semi auto, 5 wheel guns, and about 10 long guns with zero being centerfire rifles of any kind. No 380,9mm or 40 ammo and 4 boxes of 45. Went and got 4 boxes of 9mm target ammo and a couple boxes of 380 out of the jeep and took back in. Told them to sell it and we'd settle up later (saw another member had mentioned doing that, thought why not?) One guy wanted to buy it all and I said one box of each or I'll just keep it. 6 boxes lasted a grand total of 2 minutes...At the sticker price of whatever I paid for it.

Even if it gets no more bids he'll have $24 per box in it which is right at a 100 % increase on what it could have been bought for a couple weeks ago.

Holy Cow !!! $30 per box of 50 + shipping! Now that is panic buying.
At first I had bad feelings towards the seller - but it was a penny auction , so I guess you can't call it gouging.

Just last Thursday I bought off the shelf for 1/3 that. What gets into people?

Well what this manufactured panic is demonstrating is how quickly our rights are being violated and how easy it is to do it.

Freedom of Assembly - Gone. Only government approved size groups and locations are allowed. It is down to 10 people according to some reports.

Freedom of Religion- Gone. See comment about Freedom of Assembly. Well you can self-practice your religion at home.

Freedom to Bear (purchase, acquire, etc.) Arms - Gone. Ordering gun stores closed for a “crisis” that has nothing to do with Corona 19. Gun store owners and gun owners should be pushing back hard on this.

Probably shill bidding, just like what we saw when the first Colt Python was listed on GB. Look at the bid history, it is new registered people bidding up the listing.

I don’t understand why some people buy ammo that they never plan to shoot.
.
I recently started shooting up some ammo I bought over ten years ago. The political and social landscape of the last 20 years has made people who can gobble up in panic fearing later they won't be able to, which is half justified in my opinion given that anti gun politicians openly say they will end or limit supplies if they can.

Thankfully I am well stocked up and learned from 2008 and 2012. I can watch this panic from the sidelines.
I am pretty much also and I did buy some bulk cases last week but I did it out of election year prepping, it just arrived today glad I did now. I believe ammo will come back once the virus panic slows down, what I am worried about is if the virus doesn't slow down because if the economy takes a big hit people won't have jobs to be able to afford ammo among other things.

I have pretty much decided to stop buying for a while even if ammo becomes available until I know my job is still secure, we have already been told that the first positive case that shows up at work we are shut down for at least two weeks. Other people in different jobs like bars and clubs for example are already shut for 30 days here in FL. Other industry are cutting back hours if not closing completely.

Fact is for now I probably will stop going to my public range and limit contact with strangers until we know just how much this virus spreads and for how long.

Our local Academy is having a big sale. Bought 200 rounds of Federal 9mm, .40S&W and .45 acp yesterday; along with 1000 rds of .22LR CCI mini-mags. Soon as the weather clears (and I get the yard mowed) I'll be heading to the range. They had plenty more on the shelves after I was done. May go back tomorrow to see what else they're holding.

Color me shocked.

What do guns have to do with a pandemic?
Many first time buyers are running to the store to buy a gun in fear of social and economic breakdown. Those people doing so probably buy a box or two, those buying up cases of 1000 are gun fans in their own panic mode worried that supply will dry up for a while. Those that are bidding up a case of 9mm to $600 are the seller themselves doing shill bidding which shows their true nature, because I doubt many real buyers are going to pay that.

As far as anti gun politicians banning sales, well they are just being their true nature
