I have heard that centerfire ammunition will last 100 years or more under the best storage conditions. Is the same also true for rimfire and shotgun ammunition?
Is it dangerous to store several thousands of rounds of ammunition inside of a house if the ammo is all packed in military ammunition cans?

I would assume so, judging by all the surplus calibers. I don't see why it wouldn't be safe, at least.

If kept dry, and cool, ammo will last almost indefinitly. If exposed to moisture and or high temps. all bets are off.
