Ammo Shock!

The best is when they ask, "What is the best SHTF gun?" That topic has rode hard, and many times

Also, someone said ammo price increase, so my weekend outing will be dampened because I will not be able to find any ammo.

He is probably the gun store owner that sells Wolf for $12.00 a box, and tells people they better get it while they can. That is the type of store owner that I will laugh at when they are forced to close up shop, permanetly!!

I picked up a couple boxes of blazer 9mm for $11/box last weekend on my way to the range.

Doesn't seem that expensive to me.

prices

are some people on this thread as stupid as they appear.OPEC does not get the money from the oil that you think.the prices on the stock market are made by people buying futures.in other words the people buying the stock get the money.the price they pay is what OPEC gets.and OPEC does not set the price.as to china goods the manufacturers have been harrassed by the gov,til its better to get goods from over seas than to go thru the hoops that this gov demands.order what you want, pay the import tax and sell it.I personaly buy from harbor freight.they have items america does not make and the price I can afford.and if the axxes get rid of SS which I paid into and worked all my life for then I WILL be p*****sed.as to ammo if the demand becomes more than the production lines can handle WHAT HAPPENS.if you want change you sure got it.some of you want the NRA to DO IT.how about you do it and get on the active list.  :banghead: :fire: :p

I stood in line today at WalMart to buy ammo because of a radio talk show host that stated Obama Bin Biden wants to raise the tax on ammo ASAP. The amount of increase 500% and also a $0.50 to a $1.00 on a pack of cigarettes and a $1.00 or so on cigars. I believe that we must refuse to accept this BS before he eats away all of our rights. We had better hurry, his Strong Civilian Force is in the approval cycle now. Thats the presidents "Enforcers of his AWB"

I had a rare Friday off today, had a few errands, went by both Wallyworld and Sportmans.

Same bare shelves.

Pistol ammo very limited if any. Not much better for rifle.

I did score a pound of powder though. Shoulda bought 2- but times are tough.

Wal-Mart is very low on ammo and has been for a couple of months. I have checked several - also during trips, same thing. Talking with workers there they say they are getting partial shipments and when it comes in it is gobbled up right away.

I did manage to find some Blazer 9mm for $8.95 a box - that is a steal in today market.

If mass purchases are fueling the prices - I am part of it. I am stocking up!!

Good luck all-

Rourke

WOnder why they re still overpriced when China is slowing down as well. I bet its the ammo hoard craze that s driving the dealers to place more profit as such.

So, how does it feel to be "part of the problem"?

The problem right now is panic, partisan hostility, and immature cheap shots at elected officials. The mature thing to do would be to keep a vigilant eye for actual impending legislation, make our opinions known to our elected representatives, and spread the word to others in a mature and educated fashion.

Spreading panic, calling officials insulting names, and basing decisions on "some guy on right-wing radio said..." rather than on actual legislative info is doing nothing to improve our stance, and only contributes to market fluctuations and negative perceptions of gunowners.

Earlier this year, commodities prices (copper, lead, tin, steel, petroleum) went sky-high for one reason; speculators.

They were yanking all their money out of hedge funds, stocks, and other paper wealth that had been, and still is, losing dollar-denominated value, and buying these commodities at what would normally be insane prices, betting that these commodities would serve to "preserve their wealth". The actual result of these speculator's actions was to price many out of the commodities market, stifle the demand for products made from these commodities, and contribute to the crap-storm now upon us.

This is what happens when the government sticks its nose in the economy. It creates a misallocation of resources (e.g. capital into hedge funds, sub-prime mortages, SIVs, etc) which, over time, and in a convoluted series of actions, seriously disrupts the natural balance of the markets.

All this being said, my bet is we're not going to see drastically lower commodity prices, and therefore ammo prices aren't going to go back down significantly.

I saw this coming two years ago, and started buying as many reloading components as I could, so I'm set for a little while. I am, though, going to continue to get my hands on stuff as it becomes available. Why? Because even though we see the beginnings of a deflationary event, at some point the debt destruction and asset devaluations that are currently keeping us from hyper-inflationary situations is going to cease. When it does, all the money that's being "created" by the Fed is going to hit the general populace. At that point, we'll be lucky to by a loaf of bread for a week's wages.

All that stuff contributes to the problem......BUT:

It's mostly about demand.

Fear breeds stockpiling of ammo. Big time demand.

Stockpiling of ammo drives prices sky-high.

FEAR.......fear is the real problem.

All these stories about plots to put serial numbers on ammo, confiscation of guns, etc.....all the hysteria about economic disaster and the end of life as we know it.....

What's the result?

Panic buying, stockpiling and huge profits for those who sell.

They sure know how to push certain people's panic buttons.

That's true to a degree. My contention, though, is that ammo prices wouldn't be at this level were it not for the rapid increase in commodity prices in late summer 2008.

PT Barnum said "there's a sucker born every minute". Why keep prices down when you can bleed the suckers dry.

These forums are a powerful tool and meeting place of many hobbiest. Why doesn't head of this forum link up with head of others and designate a rep. Have that rep call Remchesterby and put the question to them.

You're loyal/beholden customers wait a clear an sensible reply....

Commodity prices are down at least on a spot basis. Manufactures need a constant supply and will have stores at much higher prices.

That said, I think the ammunition makers are taking advantage somewhat.

But to look at it another way.... if your business is so busy that you need more people but you believe that by the time you train them demand will be more normal... what to do? Overtime. Costs more. Also it is human nature to raise prices when you can sell every piece you manufacture. I would.

I have also heard the manufactures are running at capacity..... that means they have to build a larger facility and buy machines and so forth beyond just training people. Gets complicated.

The ammo situation is getting crazy out there. I was at one of the local big box outlets today in hopes of getting some 9mm range ammo (WallyWorld in my neck of the woods has been out of Winchester White Box 115-gr for weeks now), and the place was just packed -- as busy as I've ever seen it. People were standing in line for background checks, the shelves were about empty of guns and ammo (including 9mm of any stripe), and the clerks were both harried and hurried. I watched with some amusement as two guys started arguing about who was going to get what was left of the Blazer .22lr bulk ammo (five or six boxes remained). A clerk had to come from behind the counter and encourage them to split what was left; one guy wouldn't hear of it and left in a huff, calling loudly that he'd never be back. The clerk mumbled "Good -- I'll hold you to it" on his way back around the counter.

You'd have thought that the world was ending.

After this experience, I went to another shop, this time an actual gun store as opposed to a box outlet, still trying to get some 9mm (no luck again), and the situation there was worse: too many people, not enough guns to go around, and almost no ammo to speak of.

I'd say that all of these meatheads are making it darn tough on the rest of us reasonable fellas. :D

A lot of it is people who see the price going up, and buy more ammo!

"OH wow the price is going way up, I better buy tons of it now before it goes any higher".

You can laugh but its a positive feedback term in the economics of any consumable commodity.

While the price is trending lower, nobody buys until absolutely necessary as it likely will cost less later, but when prices are going up you restock as soon as you can and carry as much inventory as practical as it'll cost more when you need more later.

This is rational behavior. Popular calibers are pretty hard to find around here except for the premium loads right now. Lot of empty shelve space at the local Academy and Walmart last week.

The mature thing to do would be to keep a vigilant eye for actual impending legislation
If you think ammo is scarce now, wait until something is actually introduced!

As I've said in all the post election threads, things will not be getting back to normal until a gun/ammo control bill is introduced and dies. If it doesn't die quickly, you ain't seen nothing yet in terms of panic buying!

I have been casting 45 bullets all week, i have been loading all week, i buy 223 ammo when i find it, primers and powder, i dont know whats gona happen, but im not gona be without! if you sit around and wait for prices to come down your gona have a long wait! i used to buy a gun when i had a few extra $, now i buy ammo, am i crazy? maybe, csa

I think that all this "panic buying" is great.

It is just the "stimulus" that our economy needs to get rollin' again.

BUY!!! BUY!!! BUY!!! BUY!!!

I was in Carter Country in Houston a couple of weeks ago and they had LOTS of WWB 115gr 9mm FMJ. Probably because it was priced at $ 17/box of 50. Since I wasn't wearing a sign with the epithet "SUCKER" on it, I refrained from buying any.

I'll bet they STILL have lots of that ammo on the shelves.

Some of the prices at places like CheaperThanDirt and Natchez seem to be improving just a little.

Maybe more of us are wising up.

Hope so.
