I’m negotiating with someone local on a trade, ammo for a gun. He has a Beretta PX4 9mm (I’ve wanted one for a while now) and is interested in trading for some 45 ACP ( Win white box 230 gr) and 22 LR. (Federal 40 gr LRN). What price per round is fair? I looked on ammoseek and the 45 is about $1 per round and the 22 is $.26-.36 lore round. Is it right to use these prices? Thoughts please.

What is fair is whatever price he's willing to accept.

I think a fair price for the gun is $400-$450 depending on what it comes with. Locally I have bought WWB .45acp, $60/100 or $120/200. And I did buy some Federal Automatch .22LR direct from Federal for $26 for 325rd bulk pack plus shipping. I think gunbroker is on the higherside for pricing stuff.

I would be looking at it like this.
#1 it's whatever price you both agree on, obviously.
#2 If I still owned a 45auto or 22LR I may be looking to replace said ammo. Trading it away at a price at which I cannot replace it with means I just gave the other guy an even better deal.

Those values seem HIGH to me, given that locally I've gotten .22 for 6 cents a round retail within the last couple weeks. You've got to be there when it arrives, but it's around. Just got 2k 9MM for 30 cents around as well, last Saturday, and I left another 4k on the shelf for other vultures. Shoulda neckbearded it all and sold for profit, but I was feeling generous. As ojibweindian says though, it's worth whatever he's willing to pay.

Any gun or ammo is worth what someone is willing to pay for it as long as you both agree on what a fair price is. With exception of those who jacked their prices the normal rate I pay for .45 ACP Win White Box or Remington UMC is about $25 bucks for a 50 round box and I generally get the 100 round boxes for about $50 so about a half buck a round.

Back in the last panic I paid as much as $25.00 a box for .45acp fmj, during the last .22lr panic I sold Federal 325 bulk for $40.00

So while prices today seem crazy I believe we’re witnessing the beginning of a new normal in ammo prices because of demand and Walmart not selling.

Think about replacement cost unless you’re getting out of a caliber.

I'd value the 45 at $30/50 and the 22 at $75 a brick. Leaves a little something for everyone.

I went to a gun show end of last month they were selling 22 lr's rounds for 25 cents a piece in ziploc baggies out of a bulk box. The highest I got for it was 21 cents through and auction. I probably netted 18 cents around. I sold off a bunch of Ammo I bought at an estate sale back in March and tripled my investment not counting all the stuff I kept. 45acp wasn't bringing the premium that 9mm was but I was getting pretty close to a dollar a round. If you are trying to do good heres a photo from cheaper then dirt's website showing 9mm 50 ct Winchester whitebox for $99.

In my opinion. Yes, it's fair. Everybody knows the stakes and knows that ammo hiked significantly in the last year. He is going into it with his eyes open. You have something he wants, he has something you want. It's not like you're forcing a hardship on him. The price and availability is what it is. Current market value and what you paid for it have lil to do with this transaction. You're giving up something too, you're just making out good, assuming you bought pre covid, riots, etc.... ammo is a hot commodity.

As he never responded to my emails when I made him offers on the PX4 I would go HIGH!!!! :)

Seriously though, ammoseek is about the best start point I think. Plus, no shipping nor tax on yours.

The old saying is “it’s a fair deal If each side thinks he cheated the other.” That’s really just proverb-talk for what others have said—anything you both agree on is fair. I’d feel okay going on the high side for the ammo since you have to get lucky to replace it, at least around where I live.

Make him an offer of whatever you feel is a bit high on your end.
I ran into a guy last week that was looking for .45 acp blasting ammo. I have about 1000 rounds of Freedom Munitions 230gr JHP Reman. All of it I've used has worked fine. I offered him 200 for $80 and he acted like I was trying to rob him.

That seems totally fair to me. There are starving kids in Africa that would kill to pay $80 for 200 rds of .45acp

I'd say make him an offer at current average value and go from there.

If it was a buddy I'd say bargain at normal rates or closer to it. I sold my father-in-law some .223 at 30 cents a round recently because he's out and I have a decent amount for how rarely I get to shoot. He was very appreciative. I also gave him a 20 round box for helping me replace the wax ring for my toilet, haha.

That being said, if it's a stranger current value and he can counter-offer.

Its very much a sellers market right now. Dont think you are going to be able to dicker much. Its just going to get more expensive the more the shortage drags on. Shelves are empty across the country. This New wave of shooters arent very concerned w price per round. If you dont have a stash, you had best take whatever you can lay hands on.

Furthermore, pre pandemic when prices were sane I recall seeing 250rd value packs going for around $75-$80ish iirc. So @ $80 for 200 it seems like you were cutting him a pretty decent deal. I would have told him to go visit a gun shop with .45acp in stock and get a look at the price. Then he can see who's robbing who.

While the current value of ammo has been duly noted above - can anyone speak to whether or not the PX4 is currently drawing a premium as well?

Which PX4? Is the model available right now and what are they going for?

Me? I comp from ammoseek as well though, I take the two highest comparable rounds, split the difference and deduct a particular percentage.

Todd.

The store we were in had Barnaul or whatever steel 9mm for $27.99/50. I felt like $20/50 brass case .45 was very reasonable even if it was reman. I did end up selling some to a good friend for about that price and he was thrilled. Bought a 1911 in July and hadn't fired it yet. And I get the empty brass back.

Well It would be a cold day in hell before I would pay $0.26 a round for .22 RF ammo and $1.00 a round for .45 ACP. I would have to be awful desperate ,and then would only buy a 50 count box just to have some if I were completely out. To each his own, so whatever someone else wants to pay is up to them.

If someone told me their Federal .22 was worth $.36 per round I’d tell them my PX4 was worth at least a grand.
