I have run into the situation where I have been given about 600 rounds of pistol ammo and I don't own a single gun in that caliber. I don't want a pistol in .40 S&W, and don't want to add another caliber to reload, but maybe a Hi-Point carbine would be interesting.

I don't really have a use for the carbine, but it would seem to be a fun gravel pit gun, and reasonably priced. I have guns I don't get to shoot enough so it seems a little silly to get another one.

OR - should I be sensible and trade the rounds for reloading components or a 1911 frame that I need?

What do you think - unneeded gun purchase or not?

My normal response to such a question is "get the gun". But in this case it seems you have pretty compelling reasons not to need or want a gun in a new caliber. So my vote is to trade or sell the ammo for stuff you can use. Components, ammo you can use, gun parts, etc...

The Hi-point carbine is fun to shoot, but 600 rds. will go fast, then what?

I'm sure you'd have no problem finding somebody to swap with for something you would find more useful.

May just be me, but...

If I was given something that does me no good, I would "pay it forward" to someone else who would benefit from it.

Good Karma has worked many times for me, and for many others. :)
I have given away many thousands of 9mm and .40 brass that I cannot use, that someone else can.
One day someone will send me a bunch of 10mm, .41 Mag, .45LC brass. Maybe.

Or maybe not.

Either way, no worries.

During the ammo shortage of the past yr I was always able to find 40 S&W ammo online. It was not cheap practice ammo but it was available.I was glad I had bought a Storm Lake 9mm conversion barrel for my Glock 22 before all the madness happened but I was comforted by the fact I could get ammo in at least one caliber my gun could shoot.

If you've got any shooting buddies with a .40, maybe you could borrow the pistol or just go to the range together and burn through it.

Actually come to think of it, you could probably buy a used .40 and sell it again for what you paid for it. A private sale with no transfer fees would be easy.

I'm with orionengnr...

Somebody gave me a bunch of NIW Colt 30 rd. AR mags for Christmas, but I already have more .223 mags than I need. I passed them along to a friend who I knew could use them. They cost me nothing.
Gun people have helped me out a lot of over the years, and I'm happy to do the same for others.

Trade it.

If I was gifted or magically fell into 600 rounds of .40 S&W right now, I would trade/sell it as well.

Well, I already have a couple hundred rounds of it. If I had none I'd keep 50-100 rounds and get rid of the rest.

Well, I have a .40 HiPoint carbine and it's a helluva shooter and big fun, so you can probably guess my suggestion.....

you could always stash it away and possible use it to sweeten a trade you may make in the future. i have 150 rds of 40 150rds of 44mag 40rds of 300wsm and acouple left over random boxes im sure one day me or a friend will be able to use the stuff.

Somewhat similar situation for me in that I bought a friend of mine some .40 ammo for practice for his CCW license, only to learn he had a 9mm. instead. So I swapped out the gift ammo with some of my own 9mm. and since I don't have a .40, I will just hang onto it for the time being.

> don't want to add another caliber to reload

"Drop in" barrels are surprisingly inexpensive for some guns. If one is available for one of yours, consider adding a spare barrel to increase its versatility.

I recently had the same problem, a friend gave me around 600 rounds of 7.62 x 25 Torkarev. I have a couple of Mauser C96 Broom Handles and figured I would just pull it down and reload to Mauser pressures. Then I found that it was all Berdan primed (even a hundred or so Seller & Bellot)
I decided that was a lot of work for just one use of the brass.
I went out and picked up a CZ52...........

Don't buy a gun. Take that ammo to the auction. Then use the funds to buy something that you want. Do you have a Mosin? Now would not be a bad time to stock up on milsurp 7.62x54R. I hear that the gun community can expect the price to rise sharply in the near future.

What type of .40 S&W ammo is it? I may be interested in a trade for some of my .45 ACP. I don't need the .40 either but I also don't currently need the .45 so it's a wash for me. I just don't want to lose any money on the deal.

Is it commercial boxed ammo or some one else's reloads? If commercial, I would trade/sell it for something I wanted and could use. If I was to buy another gun, it would be in a more preferred caliber I already load for. If it's just somebody else's reloads....:uhoh:

Just keep it. When S&W introduced the M&P40, I magically got my hands on an OEM M&P 357 Sig barrel (S&W, at the time, really wanted to know who sold it to me!).

After the "cool" factor wore off, I sold the M&P with the 357 barrel for a net gain......but I kept the 500 or so rds of 357 Sig I had. Fast forward several years and I bought a LW 357 barrel for my Glock 20. You never know when you may need it, and ammo prices ain't going down.

YMMV

Orionengr is on point.

As an attempt to do good myself, I am also a Minnesotan and happen to have a .40. I'd like to offer my time and gun to help you dispose of your burden.
