I know I saw a thread a while back about calibers other than 8mm, 7.62x54r, etc. that come in spam cans.
How common are these? The only "modern" caliber I have been able to find has been .45 ACP in Tulammo. Looks cheap enough, hear it shoots dirty as a pig in... well, feces. Is there any kind of long term damage to firearms (with proper cleaning of course) for using this cheap surplus ammo?
I found .45 ACP on sgammo.com, 450 rounds for $129.95 in a spam can here, or 500 rounds (I'm guessing without a spam can) for $139.95 here or would it be better to just go with ol' reliable and buy WWB 500 rounds for $179.95 here and spend the extra $40?

Does anyone know where to get any other calibers in spam cans/surplus bulk for a good price? Namely 9mm, 38 Special, .357, or 12 gauge?

I have seen 9mm in spam cans. If you go to Cabelas online, you will find many common calibers being sold by Herter's in spam cans. They're all automatic calibers like .233, 9mm, .45, etc. It's all steel case ammunition.
You can also find mil-surp rifle ammo in sealed plastic.

The tula, wolf, and brown bear spam cans arent surplus and wont do any damage. Why do you want it in a spam can?
Any kind of long-term storage container would be great. Just picked thought the spam cans because they're cheap and already sealed.

Thanks Sentinel :) It doesn't say that Herter's comes in spam cans (as far as I saw), so all of them just standard come in there from that mfg?

Some come that way in bulk. It depends on what you can find. I've seen other sites that had Herters spam cans. Maybe it wasn't Cabelas. I have so many ammo sites bookmarked on my home computer (I'm on a work computer), it's hard for me to remember where I saw it. I'll find it and get back to you.

To the best of my knowledge, Cabelas is the sole retailer of "Herter's" ammo (which is actually Tula in different packaging)

Just buy yourself some GI surplus .50 cal ammo cans and put whatever kind of ammo you want in them.
They are water-proof, heavy guage steel, and will last far longer then you will.

Far superior to spam cans, because you will not amputate a finger trying to cut one open with a dull pocket knife after you lose the can opener key!!

This.

I have had an innate mistrust of spam cans ever since a friend of mine reported opening a can of milsurp 7.62x51 (I want to recall it as being SA but it might have been Port) and found the entire lot covered in black tar goo and the brass heavily corroded.

I want to verify the ammo's condition before I seal it away for posterity....

Ammo cans are the more practical option. Unless you plan on burying the ammo for some reason.

I sand mine down then paint them with rustolium. Different color for different calibers.

Thanks for the input on the ammo cans. I think that'd be the best option. If buried, what would be the better alternative?

Remo223, where do you buy yours?
