I found an AMT 45 Backup pistol. Has anyone had any success in making one of these reliable? Are parts and mags still available for them? It appears to be in excellent condition. The serial number is DA264X. Is there anywhere to find info about when it was made? Thanks

I've never had one but from what I've read they are hit or miss. I would try shooting it first, you might get one of the good ones. If not I've also heard that people have had success with them after doing a fluff and buff, smoothing everything out.

Assuming you've got the double action model, there are some parts available...

I've been looking for one myself, I like the size of it and I actually prefer a heel type mag release for pocket pistols.

MADDOG, below is a Link to a Thread I recently started about my Back Up .45. I think it has a lot of useful and positive information for anyone looking to purchase one of these little cannons.

It's filled with photos and a few video clips taken at the Range, just yesterday.

Here's a video clip showing my Back Up feeding and rapid firing 185gr semi-wadcutters.

45 amt

I had bad luck with 2 brand new 45's. Used 185 and 200 gr HP both fed fine, shot well at 5 yd, first 3 mags full, moved to 7 yd, thought slide locked back, didnt, recoil broke slide. Sent back to company 2 months got new gun, same thing happened, sent back 2 months tried again, same, got another new one took to gun show traded.

Thanks, Maddog.

Regarding parts availability, there are two good sources. Also, Wolff makes and sells a heavy recoil spring for large bore BUs with FTF and FTE issues.

Try to stay away from BU 45s that have a S/N starting with "DLX" prefix. These pistols were made by Galena Industries after they took over AMT. Galena designed and incorporated a Firing Pin Safety Block, but the design was flawed. The firing pin would frequently contact the safety block after being struck by the hammer. This constant contact eventually led to light primer strikes and broken firing pins.

I have had one forever. Use ball/full jacket ammo and i have had no problems ever. Takes a firm grip. Limp wristers beware.

It's obvious that felt recoil is very subjective.

I find my Back Up [shooting 230gr FMJ loads] is easier to control than my Glock 30 [45acp] and the Glock 26 [9mm] I use to carry not too long ago.

My Back Up .45 is THE softest shooting 45acp pistol Ive ever owned.

go figure...... :)
