AMT Automag III in 30 Carbine caliber
I found one of these locally he wants $600 what do you think? Condition is excellent and looks like it hasn't been fired much. Odd ball caliber and do you think the old AMT's will be a good investment? Are any of you familiar with this gun and caliber and why would they make it in 30 carbine? I bet it would make a good deer pistol.
Any imput helpfull....Russ

It has been my experience that the AMT guns in .30 carbine, .357 mag, and .22 mag are single shot pistols at best. If it actually cycles and chambers the next round it is a miracle. JAM-O-MATIC Others may have diffent experiences though.

I have great respect for the .30 carbine round as a defensive cartridge from the M1 Carbine. However, it's designed for a carbine-length barrel and from that barrel, it's considered marginal for deer with very little room for error. I really wouldn't think, from a handgun, the .30 carbine is a viable candidate for deer.

I think the handgun would be great for novelty, turning heads at the range.

I had one for years, it shot good but very high for the sights. Finally had 1/10th inch added to the front sight and it would stay on paper then, still high though. It wants full power loads to function. I finally traded mine off.

Automag III under a different banner?

I have an Automag III, but the logo is " iAi " (Irwindale Arms).

I bought it in 1989 and I don't know if it is pre or post AMT, but this pistol has performed flawlessly from the get-go. I hand load a 100gr half jacketed spire point bullet and it chronos as 1652 fps with it's legendary fireball. I was surprised by it mild recoil because the noise will send the .44 Mag. boys home to mama and it is more than reasonably accurate. I've never regretted buying it and it's destined to be bequeathed to someone - which I hope doesn't happen any time soon.

Anybody have one of these or knows the strory behind the brand change?

When Arcadia Machine & Tool (AMT)went bankrupt, they were purchased by Irwindale Arms Incorporated (iAi)....they were famous for their quality and reliability problems. The company also went through other names, the best known being TDE and OMC

The New High Standard, in TX, currently sells some products from the line
