I recently found that a friend of mine is selling a Shurikenjutsu DVD. Danny Fletcher is a 5th Dan studying with Hatsumi in Japan, and I have a video on another subject he made last year.

As a poor student myself, what I *really* need is for an objective party to buy one of these, and review it for us! :D

The shuriken is one of the only weapons prohibited in Indiana.

Fortunately, it can be easily substituted for!

Also, there are two basic types of shuriken, senban and bo. Typically, due to the ninja movie phase some years ago, only senban (flat, multibladed) shuriken are prohibited. At close range, bo are more useful anyway. ;)

Only if you use .45 caliber shuriken with hollow points. Only schoolgirls use 9mm shuriken.

:D

Joke.. so.. old..

You'd have to understand the theory of shuriken use, which I imagine Danny goes into in detail.

In a nutshell- no, but that doesn't mean there aren't useful applications.

John,

I threw both a lot when I was a young fella. I checked the IN criminal code and I believe I can have bo legally. Hmm...maybe I should buy that Paul Chen set and play with them in my garage...

Dangit first you make me want to buy an HI now I have an itch for shuriken. ;)

I'm here to help. :D

Back when I first got my hands on some, I had no idea of how to use them. There really are "better" techniques.

John

Hmm...IIRC shuriken were supposedly used by fleeing ninja in order to wound and distract pursuers, not to kill (difficult to get penetration). Requires a lot of accuracy (to hit unarmored vulnerable zones) and generally a full body motion for the throw. Both types (wheel/star and spike shape) can be used in close-range as claw-like weapons.

Can anyone correct me on this? Or provide more info? :)

Mulliga,

That's essentially correct, as I understand it. Of course, you can feel free to buy Danny's video, and see if his study in Japan has led him to any other conclusions.

I also confess I haven't the faintest idea of how to do seated throwing, which I understand Danny also mentions.

John

I was a little confused

I thought this tread was about making shuriken FROM dvds :D

Heh.

Well, there are only so many types of weaponry, and everything that can be pressed into service as expedient falls into one of a few categories:
sticks
flexibles
blades
projectiles

So, yes, knowing how to use a senban shuriken could teach you how to use a DVD like a shuriken. :)
