I've been trying to do a better job of keeping up with useful offerings as far as defensive shotgun DVDs are concerned, and have added a couple of new (to me) items to the library here. Recently Rangemaster put a few of their DVD offerings on sale, and one of them was Tom Givens' Defensive Shotgun video. So I ordered a copy. It sells for $29.95, and IMHO is well worth its cover price.

So far this is the best DVD I've seen for the complete beginner. It really does cover the basics well. Some here might not know Tom Givens- here's his bio from the Rangemaster web page at http://www.rangemaster.com/ :

Rangemaster’s Chief Instructor, Tom Givens, is a noted authority on the subject of self-defense. Tom has over twenty-five years of experience in law enforcement and specialized security services including the use of firearms to defend himself and others. He has over twenty years of firearms instruction experience and has trained thousands of law enforcement officers, military personnel, and private citizens. Tom is also an accomplished competitive shooter having won numerous matches and titles as well as having served on the IDPA Board of Directors.
Tom has operated a self-defense school in one of the most violent metropolitan areas in the United States for over ten years. To date, over forty-five private citizen students of Rangemaster have been involved in shootings and everyone of them has won. No other shooting school has such a solid record of preparing private citizens for the realities of the streets.

Tom is also an accomplished author, having published almost 100 magazine articles, and five textbooks. He has also been a lecturer at numerous national conferences including the National Tactical Invitational. Tom has taken all of his real-world experience, teaching ability and put them in book and most recently, video format.

No training video, no matter how well it's presented, is IMHO a substitute for hands-on training with a good instructor. But a DVD of this nature is a good way to get some exposure to the teachings of a particular instructor you might be interested in training with, or to learn about some of that instructor's concepts and methods.

I've only had an opportunity to watch this one for one sitting so far, and I'll add more detail as I get a chance to see it a couple more times. But for anyone looking for a good beginner level instructional DVD on using the defensive shotgun effectively, I'd suggest this one.
