An interesting Offer of ammunition to the Ukraine

CapnMac:

Having seen no images of Ukrainian SU-25s, I didn't know that any are operational.

When the Soviet Union broke up (you already knew this - others might not-), every former Soviet state also inherited various civilian airliners etc., not just military systems.

I just hope that the Ukr. accumulated plenty of spare parts over the years, and also secured some bomb-proof fuel tanks for their version of JP-4, JP-5 refined av. kerosine etc.

Hopefully the Mig-29s etc donated by Poland and other countries will be kept airworthy.

Ukrainian AF committed to the Su-25 pretty early on. Bulgaria was going to send their remaining Su-25s (about a dozen). These were the Soviet export version, down rated, naturally. Albania was poised to do similar with their remaining handful. Now, all of those were old, too, many dating back two or more decades. (Part of why the deal fell through, that and ITAR).

The former Warsaw Pact nations had been equipped with Flankers as their ground-attack aircraft. Most of those were very old in the tooth by 1995, and were largely with newer a/c from the West. Bulgaria & Albania had bought the export Frogfoots in the 80s, almost as soon as they were available; Ukraine updated in around 1990, just before the Fall. And helped Sukhoi out by buying Frogfoots directly from them.

Ehh... Not my place to says what is right of wrong in that part of the world. Both sides are spewing propaganda. The essence is the old rulers want their places back and are taking measures to do it. It is curious that the lights are on and people are constantly posting stuff to the internet. Seems to me if someone who shall not be named truly was in full destruction mode the Ukrainian cities would be dark along with half of Europe freezing when Gazprom cuts their pipeline service. Of course that is a big reason so much of the rest of the world says plenty but does nothing. Always remember winners make demands while losers beg to negotiate.

As to the OP, to whom would a company actually give a million rounds of ammo? Maybe the UN blue helmets are going to set up safe zone distribution centers like they do for food and medical supplies in other warzones.

As of today, neither Bulgaria, or Poland and Slovakia (don't know about Albania) are going to send any Su-25's or MiG-29's to Ukraine - that was a hoax created by Josep Borrell, the EU security chief. Bulgaria and Slovakia in particular don't have enough operational fighter jets to protect their own air space, let alone give them to other countries... This is, as russians call it, a "partenka" - a hoax (and a piece of cloth, used as substitute for socks ;))...

Polands Mig 29s are modernized and in tippy top shape, but it was NATO command the killed the deal for now. Washington is on the fence with sending Poland western planes (what type, I'm not sure but they will be American) to replace those Migs, which will then be turned over to Ukraine. We don't know yet if it will happen...but it will have to be soon, but many want to do it, others urge caution because it could escalate things.

Myself...I say do it. Give Poland modern stuff...give the old stuff to Ukraine. Guarantee it the shoe was on the other foot, Putin would be giving them planes and anything else they wanted. In Korea, Soviets pilots even flew the Migs. Givem a dose of his own medicine.
