For those out there searching for great shotguns at reasonable prices......

Met Anapex at PGC today by arrangement to check out his "New" 870 TC. For those coming in late. this is an 870 Wingmaster Trap gun with C grade wood. Remlumber comes in divers grades, there's only D and F grade above his. Cut, not impressed checkering done well with no overruns nor gaps. The forearm was the extra long one.

When Anapex opened the plastic hard case, I noted the new appearance of everything. The chokes, all 5, showed no use and looked new. So did the TC, though a phone call to Remington revealed it was made in 1988.

This did indeed have one of the fabled overbore target barrels. Remington went with the overbore craze back then and made some barrels with the bore about .745" instead of the standard .729" or so. The bore comes down in diameter before the choke area, to standard size, so standard Remchokes can be used. They're marked differently and differ in diameter from what you'd expect. A choke that would give Skeet dimensions in a standard barrel will give IC to Mod patterns in these, the .011" choke already in the barrel makes a running start on constriction.

So, we shot. Anapex was getting the feel of things and I shot less well than I wanted to with Number 6. So, I switched to my TB for the second round. I wanted to compare and contrast the two.

Halfway through the round, Anapex started getting light hits and some misfires. So we adjourned to the clubhouse where we took the TC apart. The firing pin spring was broken.

The bolt from Number 6 was pressed into service and we continued to shoot.

We used this time to drill Anapex in takedown procedures and PM.

We shot two rounds of standard wobble. Then we shot a flurry, and by that time Anapex was hitting most of them with his new gun. Then,a low gun round followed by shooting from Skeet positions 2 and 6, half a box at each. Much fun, and the different conditions had us concentrating hard on the birds. Wind gusts to 30 MPH helped on that also.

We compared and contrasted the two T grades. The TB was made in 1978, and has impressed checkering vs the well done cut checkering on the TC.

A similar barrel was offered for sale on trapshooters.com recently. Asking price, IIRC, was $300.

The big TC barrel has a higher rib with a step at the rear. A short cone, but otherwise very close to all the bellsnwhistles for barrels on target shotguns.

At the end, where Anapex was centering his birds quite frequently and grinding them into separate molecules, I noted that he had the case, $100 worth of chokes and a superb 870 Target gun for about what one pays for an Express alone at a chain store.

So for those of us looking, take heart. The deals are still out there.....

Well if I had to get in to 870s I guess this was the gun to do it with! Shooting was great today although I think towards the end I trusted my snap shooting a little more then I should have. The wind was fun too, the one shot I remember which I'm glad I wasn't the one shooting on it was one that appeared to be a nice floater out in front until it just dropped rather quickly 5 or 6 feet. Fun stuff that beats spending the time at work anyday :) . I already have a replacement spring lined up to fix the only problem I had with the gun, all I need to do is get the bolt back to the shop I got it from. Dave, Thanks again for showing me how to do the takedown and letting me borrow #6s bolt and no the TC isn't for sale yet :neener:

Dave, great report.

Anapex, sounds like quite a great find!

Oh yeah, since I'm lacking some imagination...

anapex,

My usual best blessing applies double here:

May you live long enough to wear it out!

Quick update: Went to the shop and swapped out the firing spring with a replacement they had handy. Two primer only hulls later and I was out the door with a working gun again!

I'll also try to get some pictures posted here once I take some. We'll see how quickly it gets done there are an awful lot of SciFi shows on tonight ;)

Still wearing a grin,Anapex? I am, seeing a friend get a great deal. The setup is well worth twice the price you paid.

And like I've said, if you decide to sell it call me first, but I doubt that will ever happen.

You do need to hit the patterning board, just to make sure.

Chris, if you're down this way, I do have an "Extra" 870 you could use for a bit of clays.

Lee, wait till you see the pics. It's GAWGEOUS!!

Dave,

I bet it is gorgeous, it sounds like a work of art as well as a great tool for swatting clays. And I am happy for him too, that really is an almost unbelieveable deal and best of all it went to someone who appreciates it for what it is. That's one Cinderella that came with the gown, the coach and four, the jewelry and everything!

The Big Green Borg has its ways... traps are set, and sprung, and yet more of the unsuspecting are assimilated 8^).

Yeah I figure I'll get my moneys worth out of it  . I just wish I had gotten a shot of the old spring. It literally disintegrated when you touched it.

Where is that drool smilie?

Nice find there Anapex! I passed on a TB a year or so ago for $275 and could kick myself... and it wasn't nearly as nice as yours.

I notice that Dave doesn't even have to ask "How's it shoot?" :D :D

Looks good, Anapex. You take nice pics.

TR, it shoots well. The "Feel" is subtly different from mine, probably due to the slightly more pronounced weight forward balance. Adding a couple oz under the pad would bring the balance back a trifle.

Soft shooter, I tried some handicap loads in it and didn't note the kick.

Sorry cost was listed in another thread and then the discussion carried over here after Dave and I broke it in a little. I lucked on to this beauty for $250, I've been told that they can go for double that.

The big moral of this story is haunt your local gun stores like a bad case of hemorrhoids and you too can come across deals like this ;)

Luck clearly had nothing to do with it!
You are correct. It is karma.

anapex, getting deals like this will catch up to you. At least I have to think this so I don't get envy. :p
