"Angry" parent brings gun to school (Western NC)

I'd say... pick and choose battles... don't pick this one.

Let's give her the benefit of the doubt and say she somehow forgot schools were off limits. Ok. People make mistakes. Keep your mouth shut. If it really, really bothers you... go move the car off school property and come back.

What possible good could ever come of TELLING ADMINISTRATORS at the school that she broke the law, while she was still there breaking it? I'm sorry. This lady is either too stupid for her own good or is a criminal. Maybe both.

I just traded in my Camaro for a Corvette. When we were finishing up, the dealer says, "You got everything out of your old car?.. Money, Cell Phone, Guns?"

At first I was kinda offended because I thought he was assuming I was a gangbanger or something.

Then he explained and said, "You wont believe how many people keep guns in their car and forget about them. I always have to call people and tell them to come pick them up because they left it in under the seat or in the center console"
OT, but I left a speed loader full of Black Talon .357s in the ash tray of my last truck when I sold it. I didn't realize it for a couple of months, and by then it was too late. :(

At least I didn't leave my gun in there.

Mentioning "I have a gun (in the car or at home or whatever)" during an angry dispute is an implicit form of making a threat. The school did the right thing to treat her statement as a threat. When is it ok to say, "I have a gun"? When someone asks you, "hey we're going to the range, will you need to rent a gun or do you have one of your own?" That's about the only time it's good to bring something like that up in conversation.

As a school employee, I'd like to contribute two centavos. First, you are not allowed to have any gun on school property. School property includes the parking lot. The woman was an ID10T to open her mouth.

OTOH, when I worked in aerospace, a lady who rode the car pool with me accidentally walked into work with her pistol. She forgot she had it in her purse and kept her mouth shut until she got home. Forgetfulness happens. I went to the airport to pick up my mother in law once and forgot that I had a pocket full of .22 rimfires! I didn't empty that pocket and it was pre-9/11.

Any-who, we had a gun on campus last week. It nearly went down badly for one of our sweet security ladies. IMHO, schools have a right to come down hard on any guns on campus. Columbine anyone? Gun ownership comes with a lot of responsibility.

/2 centavos

The school, hate to say it, had no choice once she said it.

I regretfully agree.
She's there to discuss the school's policy on one matter involving her child, and she (the parent of the child) arrives at the school for the meeting ALSO in violation of the school policy (not to mention the law). I can't really think of any scenario where she would mention the gun as anything but an implied, vague, or direct threat. I don't like seeing people arrested for this sort of thing, but the law is in place in that juristriction. If, on the other hand, she did'nt ever threaten anyone in the meeting, she sure does'nt know when to put a lid on it (aka needs to learn when to shut up). :banghead:

re:

Immediately, I have to wonder why she disclosed that information, if not to imtimidate. There was no reason for it. Nobody needed to know, and it didn't serve any purpose...except to throw the school into lockdown and get her arrested. If she was looking for attention, I'd say that she got more than she can enjoy.

The term "Dumb and Dumber" also comes to mind. With all the school shootings that have occurred...why in bloody hell would anybody tell a school official that they have a gun in the car unless they're a little nutty?

Why defend this woman, she is an idiot.

She threatened folks by saying she had a gun when she was pissed off.

Were you there? If the answer is no, then you don't know that. Though it does seem to be quite likely to be the case.

But the school said that no one was in any danger. Or did they say that no STUDENT was in any danger, hmmm? Then again if the gun was in the car and she was in the building, no one would be in danger from it...

I think that one thing we CAN know for sure is that if she was making a threat or NOT, she's not the sharpest tool in the shed...

As we speak, I'm missing the news...:banghead: But I just got in so I probably would have missed it anyway. I'll see if I can dig up some more FACTS about what went on...

EDIT: Hmmm

An incident on Wednesday at Williams Elementary in Swannanoa also led to a lockdown.

A woman entered the school and told the secretary she had a gun in her car.

Alleyne said the woman walked into the school around 1:45 p.m. and asked to talk to the principal about her child. Alleyne said she was upset about something that had happened at school.

During the conversation with the secretary, the woman asked about security measures at the school and the two discussed the school’s surveillance cameras.

The woman then told the secretary she was glad she had not brought the gun she had in her car inside the school, Alleyne said.

“We don’t feel that at the time she was threatening someone with the gun, but, regardless of that, if someone says they have weapon on campus we are going to take action,” he said.

Ok....yeah, she apparently was NOT threatening. But still, I think this qualifies for a "Darwin Award..." :what: :scrutiny:

the only scenario i can think of to justify her actions would be if the kid had told the faculty, "my moms got a gun in her car.". then when she comes in to talk, they ask her, and she admits it (truthfully). other than that i can't think of why it would come up in any teacher meetings i've been to.

What does CA have to do with this???

Last week I was at a car dealer ship trading my car in and a worker who was helping me clean my stuff out found 200 rds of .45 ammo I forgot about. He was nice about it though. In some other states I would have been cavity searched by the SWAT team. IE. California.

It is perfectly legal to posess(SIC) ammo in CA, nothing would have happened to you at all.

CA has great laws regarding self defense, there is no duty to retreat.

CA has great knife laws as well.

This lady opened her mouth at a gov't indoctrination center.
I bet she doesn't do that again.

If she threatened some one than tough, you don't do that when you own guns.
If it is a witchhunt we should help out if we can.

So, you buy into the zero tolerance idiocy? No wonder our schools are such a dismal wasteland.

And gun free zones would have stopped Columbine how, exactly?

How many federal, state and local laws did Harris and Klebold simply ignore in their little spree?

Are you seriously suggesting a ban on guns in schools would have stopped them?

Forgive my bluntness, <Art wuz here>

Asking about school security and then declaring that you have a gun might not sound totally innocent.

In a sane world, no, "mentioning" that you have a gun in your car shouldn't be at all remarkable.

But we do not live in a sane world. If she "mentioned" that as an oblique threat, she deserves what she gets, for stupidity if nothing else. If she allowed the principal to pressure her into "admitting she had a gun", she's just as dumb, and doesn't necessarily deserve what she gets, but she's going to get it anyway.

Ummm... I though federal law allowed a gun to be locked in the car.

What's the big deal?

What is the state law?
