Does anyone carry a secondary weapon in an ankle holster? I'm considering purchasing an ankle holster because I'm spending more and more time in my car where my primary is difficult to get at (IWB). I'm looking for suggestions/things to think about before heading down this road. If there are specific holsters that you would recommend please let me know that. My initial thought is to use it with either a S&W 642 or Kel-Tec PF-9. I'm really hoping to learn from the experiences of others on this one.

I'm not sure I'd consider ankle carry as an upgrade from IWB carry if we're talking about car access. But then again, I have a hard time just tying my shoes just sitting behind the wheel.

Maybe mount a holster between your seat and center console? kind of in a position that it would be at your hip, just a bit lower?

This would be a great solution but I'm in and out of the car a lot and will not leave it unattended that's just not an option for me. I also don't want it even remotely visible should I get stopped.

Hmm... I'm not sure of a good way to keep it easily accessible but still concealed. If its just not leaving the gun unattended, you could take your primary gun and put it in the "car holster" while driving and then move it to your IWB when you get out, but I don't know how you can conceal that if you get stopped.

Maybe if your console is deep enough, you could put the holster inside it? Just leave it open when you're driving and close it when you get stopped, and use your primary and take it with you when you leave the vehicle?

I think concealing a holster built into the car is going to be a challenge, but reaching a pistol on your person while seated with a steering wheel and a seat belt in the way is also going to be a challenge. I think your choice is going to wind up as a "lesser of two evils" as opposed to finding a solution that meets 100% of your goals.

I could see this being worthwhile, and have had the same thought. Although I don't have an ankle holster, I know in my car I could get to a gun on either ankle faster than on either hip because of the way my seat is setup. I also carry a fairly bulky gun IWB so it is harder than it has to be to draw in the car.

Edit: Whoops forgot to add if/when I get an ankle holster for the same reason, I would get a 642, I've seen a decent number of nice holsters for them at shows.

Have you considered shoulder holsters as carry options? The shoulder holster is usually considered the best for drawing while seated...

Did it for years when driving in Manhatten. Or a crossdraw.

I used an ankle holster for years when a squad car was my office.

The inside of the left ankle is definitely very accessible when seated...all you need to do is drop you right hand down between your legs to reach the grip. The thing you have to remember is to have your drivers seat pushed back far enough to not interfere with you leaning forward.

Back in the day, I carried a tuned S&W M642. If I had to do it again, I think I would go with my Kahr CW9...mostly for the flatness

What about mounting a paddle holster under your driver's seat for your primary carry gun? You can transfer when you get in and out, plus the gun would still be concealed if/when stopped, with the added benefit of being a little less of a reach than your ankle.

Just make sure the holster has some decent retention, so there isn't a chance of it coming out of the holster during a quick stop and getting under your feet/pedals.

My .02

I think an ankle hoster with the pant leg pulled up while seated in the car is extremely fast to draw, and just shove it back down (concealed again) before exiting the vehicle. As good as any other practical carry, for the expressed purpose of seated in the car defense.

Desantis makes a good ankle set-up (at least for a G26, not sure about the J frame or PF9) If you're in and out a lot and don't want to transfer the gun from the car to your holster, and you're worried about how quickly/easily you can draw from the ankle while standing... why not throw the J on your ankle and your PF9 IWB? Then you get both covered.

I actually have a G26 that I carry IWB and I have the option of either the J Frame or PF9 on the ankle as a secondary. I am leaning towards the J Frame on the ankle in a Desantis rig.

You'll notice that on the Andrew's rig, that it is pictured without the seatbelt fastened. Depending on how you wear your seatbelt, I can see it interfering with either the presentation or catching the belt as you try to exit the car in a hurry
