in your experience, not opinion, what is the best ankle holster for an all steel J frame?

what holds it the best, possitions it the best, conceals it the best.....cost is not an issue.

the elastic rigs allow too much flop and sag by the virtue of the material used.

i know Don Hume uses the same rig for all J frames regardless of hammer design. thats no good since the rig does not have an adjustable thumb-snap. the thumb-snap must be force fitted around a bodyguard style gun because the design is for a spur hammer gun....etc....

i know Alessi rigs are a piece of art, but i hear they dont conceal well.

Fobus holds it right, but its "cheapy feel" doesnt lend itself to much durabilty when running or climbing a fence.... this will be done in my line of work.

so, what say you?

thanks.

Allessi. Period.

My spurless sp101(heavier and bulkier than your j-frame) has resided in one for over 6 years. Never a sore or raw ankle, never a gun on the ground. Never been made(I usually wear blue jeans.)

Before that, I threw out better than 1/2 a dozen 50 dollar rigs.

post some pix if you dont mind, of it being worn by you with your gun, under some pant leg cuffs...... lifted up so i can also see the positioning etc.....

Hey now.... I thought this was a family site :D

Wanted an Alessi all the years I carried a S&W Mdl 49 on duty as my bug, but survived with an Uncle Mikes Nylon with the leg anchor. If I had it to do over I would have found a way to buy the Alessi or a similiar rig. I have a Fobus and it does not ride well on my leg, the edge of the plastic lays on my ankle and in about an hour I am in pain and it is taken off. Not being a LEO any longer I no longer use an ankle holster. The moral is pay the money for a top of the line ankle rig if you are going to carry in that manner.

money is no issue in this case, as ive saved enough for an Alessi IF, if it is "all that".

i do not doubt the workmanship of the rig, just the concealability.

i also see that Alessi offers a different ankle rig for the 640 .357, and the other J frames like the 36, 60, 37, 642 etc......

will the holster for the 640 .357 work with the slightly smaller 640 .38? the only diff. is the barrel length and lug, so buying the one for the 2 1/8" barrel would seem to work with the 1 7/8" barrel, or not?

also, the Alessi web site does not come up and has been down for a few days now.....how do i contact him to ask the questions i have to remove my uncertainty?

thanks for any contact help.

Sorry, I don't have access to a digital camera. As for contact info, well I suck there too. I ordered mine through a place in New York, and it's been long enough I really don't remember who it was.

As for concealability:

Wear it so the gun is actually about 4:30 or so on your calf, not straight out at 3:00. This way the grip tucks up under your calf instead of sticking out like a sore thumb.

If you can have a little patience, I'll try to get a fellow THR member to take pictures and link them. But due to work schedules it'll be about a week or so.

I would say order it and be done. I wasted almost 400 bucks on others, and this one was good to go from day 1.

Alessi - consider Ken Null -

Here's an email address for Mr. Alessi:

[email protected]

As is well known Mr. Alessi is very generous with his time when he could be filling my orders instead :)

As with any concealment rig - it is a rig requiring more pieces than just the holster. The Alessi is distinguished by the felt backing treatment - quite possibly a more minimalist design will conceal better for occasional use in airconditioned offices. For 24/7 running around use some accomodation in clothing/socks and shoes pays off.

ClarkEMyers,

Thanks for that contact info.....e-mail sent to him.

thanks again.

I've tried an Uncle Mike's with an SP-101. If you're doing minimal walking, mostly sitting, it's fine for a few hours. If you are walking much, it becomes torture after about an hour.

I wear my Allesi about 12 hours per day. Nine of which I'm always moving, up and down stairs after different things. Tried one of those free pedometers from mcdonalds once. It says I cover about 10 miles per day, all on cement floors and stairs.

I cannot praise this ankle rig enough.

I have a Galco Ankle Glove for my 642 and mt Glock 26. They are GREAT! I typically wear them about 12 hours a day. Learning the best placement is key, but I sure love mine.

Check eBay. I bought my as new J frame holster for 41.00 shipped. You cant tell it was ever out of the package.
