I picked up a Springfield Range Officer in 9mm two weeks back (before Springer announced that they were being made), and although I have yet to shoot it, I have noticed that the thumb safety is almost entirely unbeveled. The square tip of it digs into my knuckle rather painfully when I hold the pistol with a high thumb-over-safety grip, and I assume it would only get worse with recoil. Dry firing with it has already worn my knuckle raw. I have seen the safeties on other ROs have nice bevels... is this something Springfield would do under their customer service? I hear it's excellent. Thanks in advance for the help, a range report is on the way!

This is a stock photo of the Range Officer's thumb safety...is yours a lot more square

I have an EMP that had pretty sharp corners on the thumb safety...SA doesn't usually bevel the levers on the mid-priced models. I thought about sending it in to the Custom Shop and paying to have it rounded off...it isn't a warranty item...but ended up replacing it with an aftermarket level instead

Here are some pictures. When I said square, I mean SQUARE. It looks as if the only rounding on these is done as a deburring procedure. The safety looks like a mere stick-on, as opposed to something placed on the firearm with the thought of "hey, maybe a person will have to hold this someday." Sorry for the attachments, I still haven't figured out how to get the big ones like you have.

File it lightly and use touch up blue.

Soak in gently warmed Break Free CLP after completely degreasing (lacquer thinner or MEK work well for degreasing).

I've been considering doing it myself, but if I figured that if Springfield Armory could get it done, then that would be nice.

That is nasty looking. I'd pick up an aftermarket one (Wilson or Brown) they require fitting but it's really not too difficult with some small files and emery cloth.

I don't know if that would fall under warranty...it isn't that much different than the one on my EMP.

You could call and ask them, and send them the picture,...at worst, they'd say that it is in-spec

My objection was that the level was straight, rather than contoured like this one on my Drake

I would call CS at Springfield and let 'em know what's up. I did that with a very minor glich in my EMP, when I still had it,, damn I miss that pistol,, and I had a return ticket in my hand within ten minutes. And it was returned to me in about ten days. Actually, I think it was closer to a week total time. With 0 out of pocket cost.

I like to consider myself pretty mechanically inclined, so filing wouldn't be an issue. My biggest fear is that I'd pick a cold blue that doesn't match up well.:what:

I was about ready to jump in with.... Grind it smooth and cold blue it. Oxpho blue is the best ive used, but it still rusts pretty quick. Cold bluing really takes you staying after it. wanted to give you fair warning.

Alright, sounds good. I know this is starting to get off topic (Mods, feel free to adjust the thread or scold me if needed ), but I have some leftover Blue Wonder stuff that my grandpa gave to me. Any thoughts on that stuff? I don't have much experience with it.

I dremel all my thumb safeties into a nice tear drop shape. Eliminating most of the rear of the safety paddle.

It allows me to get higher and even further forward with my thumb. For a much better grip and smoother draws with much better contact with the grip safety.
