I've been shooting my camp carbine and 5906 smith recently and noticed that the pistol was way cleaner than the carbine. I'm shooting reloads with 6 grains of unique and 115gr remington HPs. Factory PMC 115 FMJ chrono'd at 1224 fps and my reloads were 1294 fps. I've heard that the spring needed to be changed to a Wolff spring on these so I have 2 questions. Will the new spring make the carbine shoot cleaner by holding the case in the chamber longer and should I go with the 16.5lb or the 21lb spring?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I doubt that the spring will make a noticable difference in how dirty it gets.

When I changed my spring, all I noticed was a change in the pattern of the ejection. Before the change it was throwing brass into the next state. After, it was only landing two lanes down at the range.

I went with the 16lb. If you're shooting hot ammo, go with the 21.

Be aware that the Camp 9 is NOT +P rated. Marlin warns against using it.

Marlin doesn't recommend +P ammo in the Camp Carbine?

FYI- Winchester 115g JHP +P+ loads chronograph about 1,350 FPS through mine.

Thanks for the replies.
DMK, would this load be considered +P loads? This load was .3 grains less than the max load in my speer manual and only .4 grains more than the minimum load. Is this hot enough to require the 21lb spring or should I drop my loads down some? Any idea as to why the case is so much blacker out of the carbine than the smith & wesson. Also the carbine was much dirtier inside than the pistol. Thanks again.

That's what it said in my manual. And if you look carefully at the gun, it'd not exactly what I'd call overbuilt. Marlin is known to be fairly conservative in their recommendations though.

Honestly, I don't know if they would or not. They just sounded a little warm to me. The guys on the reloading forum would probably be the ones to ask.
