Another example of why we need guns--just in case

Background: I was having a garage sale this weekend (actually in my barn). Yesterday, just after I opened up (9am) A State Trooper pulled in. He came up to me and asked if I had "seen anything suspicious" that morning. I said no and then asked him why. He said that someone dressed in full camo had been spotted crossing the NYS Thruway, on foot at about 9 am. Over the next hour 2 more Troopers stopped by. Now, they wouldn't say so, but there has been a big manhunt on for a guy that killed a Trooper a couple of weeks ago. Considering the intensity of the effort, I'm guessing they thought this could be the guy. I own several acres that abutt the Thruway, as do my neighbors on both sides. Some of it is really thick, and a good place to hide. So after the second Trooper left, I went into the house, where my son and his girlfriend were, and got him set up with my Hi-Point carbine (I have other guns, but he's most familiar with this one). I then loaded my folding stock shotgun, and got my (trained) personal protection dog, to take out to the barn w/ me. The way I was sitting there, I could "stash" the SG under a desk within reach, but no one would see it. And when I need to move around, I had the dog at my side, and he WILL, worst case, occupy the BG till I could get the gun, and more likely take the guy out.

Now, I KNOW my sons GF thought I was being paranoid/crazy, and even my son looked at me funny. BUT, in my mind I was simply being cautious and prepared. Remembering that this guy has pretty much nothing to lose, having already killed a cop.

What do you guys think? was I being paranoid? or just prepared "in case"?
 
I vote for inobstrusive preparations over taking no precautions at all every time.
 
I agree - a good lesson in preparation - especailly the part about alerting your family to possible trouble. The more eyes the better.
 
just a note if you are talking about "bucky" the trooper he shot is still alive.
but he is thought to be armed high power rifle and handgun so better safe than sorry not mention the $50k for his capture

Yeah, sorry about that...I don't always keep up with the news and I heard it second hand, both ways, that he'd killed, or that he'd wounded. Either way, I'd still consider him on my "rather dangerous" list.
 
What part of the Thruway?

I am not far from the Thruway and have been away from home for a week. What exits are you between?

This would be right in the area of the Henrietta exit (#46). The person in question was spotted crossing between Erie Station Road and Brooks Rd. (which I where I live). I wasn't told which direction he was seen moving, but I assume it was North (towards me). In addition to the heavily wooded/brush areas adjacent to the Thruway, there are lots of corn fields and such around here. So someone could move around an area of several square miles, under some pretty good concealment.

Haven't seen much of the Troopers today, but we're staying on "high alert" for the moment. Keeping one of the trained dogs in the yard at all times, and 3 guns (condition 3) in various parts of the house. Just in case.....
 
Staying prepared is imperative IMHO at this point. If they hem this guy in and he realizes that he can't escape the area he may look for leverage/hostages.
 
I think you did well. Like someone else already said, its good to always be prepared.
 
I went this morning to get dog food and grabbed my gun. My wife said "what do you think is going to happen at the pet store." I just responded, "so should I not wear my seatbelt either?" She understood. Being ready is a good thing. Criminals rarely allow us time to get prepared. We have to be that way already.
 
you did exactly what i would of done. About 3 months ago we had an extended power outage. My roomate and I turned on the police scanner for giggles, and about an hour into it, we started hearing a whole bunch of calls going out that (large crowds gathering at intersections, officers calling for multiple backups, etc). At that point, i threw on my kevlar vest and loaded the AR. My roomate gave me a funny look for all of a second, then it hit her what was going on less then a mile from us (the calls we were hearing on the scanner). She then said " I'll never give you **** again for keeping loaded mags in your closet".

Him; being your son, you are older and wiser than he is. May he learn from his father not to be caught unprepared.

You had stated the time factor with the dog, and so on. Had you not taken precaution as you did, and this killer did suddenly appear, where would you and your family be, as far as, in a defensable situation?

I would have done the same thing. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Ounce slug that is.

That whole bit about being paranoid is such a farce. First of all, it's the ANTI's who are paranoid: They want to take everyone's guns away because they think we might shoot someone ...

If you had a stove fire, would you not put it out? Or, would you instead call the fire department and let that little fire consume your whole house "because the authorities should handle it and a fire extinguisher is too complicated for ordinary citizens to use" ?

Bravo for you ... no reason why you shouldn't be ready all the time.
 
The thing with bucky is amazing. I'm from the Rochester area and I saw a news article that included a recent (like last week) photo of him taken with a cell phone camera. This picture showed him less than arms length away from the picture taker:what:

He grew some facial hair and had a hat on. Soemthing about trying to get onto an indian rez?
 
Just a side note: My sons GFs parents are confirmed ANTI's...But we took her out back and had her shoot a .22 and the 9mm carbine. She had a good time (even though she was apprehensive at first), and now knows that guns aren't "evil". Not sure she's a true "convert" yet, but definitely moving in the right direction.
 
I've never carried or owned a handgun...In NY the requirements are the same for handgun ownership as they are for CCW. Heck, I can't even HANDLE a pistol in a gunshop because I don't have a permit. I studied martial arts for years, and never felt the need for a CCW...Now, its so difficult to get one, its hardly worth the bother. Around the house, I prefer my long guns anyway, and on those (extremely) rare instances where I might go somewhere I'm uncomfortable, I just take a dog (I have 3 trained Shutzhund dogs.)
 
never mind ... i've lived in a "free state" so long that i can't grasp NYS laws - i thought it wasn't so bad outside NYC :(

anyway, a handgun that is always on your person is a lot better than running for a rifle or shotgun (not to say you shoudn't also have the latter stashed somewhere handy)
 
When I was young (1950's) in KS, a man came to our door. He was bloody and said he had been cut up by thugs who had come from the railyard. He thought they were chasing him. My dad brought him in and left him with me and my mom who was cleaning the poor fellow up. My dad was in and out of the house with his gun............. turns out the guy wasn't cut up by anyone. He was a thief being chased by police. He had run thru a glass door and escaped. Long story short; the cops got their man and my dad learned a valuable lesson.
 
From what I gathered about "Bucky, he's a master of disguises, an expert car thief, and unbelievable in his home break-ins. One recent story I was told by a representative from ADT was that he would enter an unoccupied residence and make himself feel right at home, making a sandwich or two, drinking the beer or whatever else was available, using the bathroom, shaving, showering, then looking through the house for things that were of value to him - money, guns and ammo, extra food, a change of clothes. Quite often when the homeowner returned, there would be only the slighest hints he was ever there 'cause he wasn't the messy kind of burglar.

Though this guy's a walking lottery ticket I wish would come strolling along on my property, he vowed never to be taken alive. Heroics could get you killed despite your best weapons and body armor ... just something to keep in mind.
