I have an older M1A Super Match (ser. no. 013xxx) that I bought at the Geneseo, IL factory back in Sept. 1979. I have always shot it with irons (great NM sights with 1/2 MOA rear adjustments) but decided to mount an optic on it just to see how it would do. I had an unused Basset Machine M1A Low Picatinny base and a Vortex Viper PST Gen. 1 in 6-24x50 mounted on one of my .308 Win Rem 700 Varmint builds. I did the transplant this morning and went straight to the local range.
Without bore sighting, I was fortunate to land 8" low and 3" right at 50 yards with a three shot group using German 147 gr FMJ mil surplus measuring about 1-1/2". A few adjustments to elevation and windage and I was sighted in with a 3-shot group at 50 yards. I switched to FGMM 175gr SMKs at 100 yards and, following a 3-shot group and a few tweaks, I was sighted in.
Putting up a new target, I loaded 10 rounds into one of my 20-round mags (grandfathered under CO law since I goth them with the rifle 40 years ago) and shot the group below. I got a 1-1/4" group at 100 yards from a M2 bipod rest with a rear bag. I'll admit to being ecstatic...the rifle is designed to shoot to 2-1/2 to 3 MOA. I attribute this successful experience to taking the barreled action out of the glass bedding only twice in 40 years and not overcleaning.
The below target was my last target of a 20-round shooting day. I did a right shoulder arms and marched off the range...this is the best I have done with this or any other M1/M1A/M14 service rifle.
Cheers,
