I don't know where you are hunting but in the area of Fl, the Northeast, where we hunt the gators have been getting wiser and wiser over the years. Hunting pressure on the open areas has reduced the number of big ones and those that are there are the wary ones.
Looks like you had fun and sense that's the idea then it was a BIG success.

Forgot to add the "How"
We were standing on the bank waiting for my buddy to bring his boat. We spotted the a gator and thought "why not". We used beef kidney on a rope to draw him in. My wife held the baited rope while I got the harpoon tip stuck in him. He took off like a raped ape. We wore him down enough to get him on the bank and that's when he got poped with the bangstick, twice.
My friend was a little upset with me cause he drove 45 min. to bring his boat and I ended up not needing it. we are hunting in south florida
