Well last Sunday I finally decided to check out a local IDPA club. I live in Lexington, Kentucky and am luck enough to be near a new indoor range which is where they hold the matches. I initially just came to watch but luckily my normal carry gear is pretty much what is needed to compete and I had arrived early enough for the new shooter check-in. Unfortunately the range didnt have any .357sig ammo for my Glock 33 so I had to rent a m27 and use my mags, which luckily will feed .40.
I knew before I even started that my main problem would be not being able to slow myself down. I was able to calm down a bit by the third scenario and actually did pretty well on it. Overall, most of the things I thought would be easy weren't at all, and things I thought would be difficult weren't that bad. Once I slow down and wait for that good sight picture I think I will improve dramatically. Of course, easier said then done.
Another plus of getting involved is that it motivates me to get some gear thats been on my to-do list for a while. My wilderness tactical belt (5-stitch 1-1/2") is due in tomorrow and I'm still hunting for a fobus double mag pouch in town. One of the shooters there (all of whom were very nice and fun to shoot with) even lent me his mag pouch so I could make it through one of the courses of fire.
The scenarios were very educational and were good at forcing you to move and use cover. My reloads were quicker than I thought they would be, and my draw time isnt bad since I've practiced that for quite some time. Double taps are certainly a point that needs practicing, as does weak hand shooting while moving.
Now the bad news. No, the horrible news. The day after I found something I love this much, the range burned down. I believe the word was some bad wiring caused the fire. I feel really awful for the owners and employees and their families. I imagine the turn around time to rebuild would be close to a year and I hope they decide to do it. Anyway, thought I would share my experiences. Take care and watch your six.

Oh that sucks. I know a lot of shooters up that way.
