This was supposed to be a winter project. I finally found the donor rifle

in a pawn shop for $275 drive out. Seems 7 mags go cheap because they are so recoil intense with the pencil thin barrel.

A trip to Brownell's web site and a few days later this arrived

So it is not a Remington 700 Safari
or a Ruger #1 Tropical
or even a Winchester 70 Safari Express
But is ain't going to cost me close to $2k either.

To paraphrase Tom Hnatiw:
Do you need this rifle? NO!
Do you want this rifle? HELL YES!

Updates to follow as progress is made.

I did not know that anyone still carried "rebarrel your savage" kits.

How much did this one set ya back

BTW I'm just insane enough that id have the bbl cut down to 18" before I installed it.

Good luck with your project-I've been looking for a donor gun too! Keep us informed! Bob

Don't overlook the stevens 200's

I've bought new ones for as little as $240 with the right sale. I do however prefer the oldes ones if I can get em cause they're not quite as cheaped out as the new ones

FFL price is $158.70, for us common folk it is $200.

The Stevens 200 does not come in magnum calibers. One would have to change the bolt head adding to the cost of the project.

For now it will continue to wear the wood. The tech support guys were not sure if the long action tac stock would fit the magnums. Need to e-mail the manufacturer to confirm before placing an order. The order included a Limbsaver recoil pad, BTW. Guess I'll find out how well they work.

Sighting will be with a NikkoSterling 1.5-6X44 Eurohunter with a 30mm tube. We'll see if the salesman was right about it being able to handle the recoil.

I have a good ortho surgeon on retainer.

Got the barrel changed today. Next step is hogging out the barrel channel this weekend.

On the recoil, I'm told that the 7 mag recoil is fast and sharp where the 458 recoil is longer smoother pulse. Hope that is correct.

They used to make Stevens 200's in 300 and 7mm mag although I wouldn't be surprised if they don't anymore.

As to recoil, you'll keep telling yourself that right up till you shoot your first hot 458 loads. Then you'll spend the time afterward mind boggling over how some "experts" can be so full of it.

I picked up a box just like that from the same retailer a month or so ago except mine says .338-06, instead of .458 win (thank god). That's going to be a cool rifle, but I don't think I'd like to be on either end when the trigger is pulled. I fired my donor rifle for this project, once with some of my hotter reloads in its native 30-06, and that crappy hard plastic stock butt-plate made it feel a couple notches stouter than '06. Needless to say, this rifle is going to get the limbsaver treatment just like all my others, count me a believer. Do you have any good ideas for ways to evenly expand the barrel channel on your stock? I was thinking maybe a large dowel wrapped in 50 grit?

Correction:
The Stevens do still come in magnums. My gun pusher said oops.

Seems like a good start, jd.

Looking forward to where you go with the project!

Big ole cartridge with a low-power scope - sounds like you've get a particular hunt in mind. Big browns? Or Africa?

I have an uncle with ties to Alaska. He has invited me to a hunting/fishing holiday.
