Continuing with my series of posts that make no sense, sometimes it feels we claim to want to protect the constitution but we are focused on only one amendment. I think they all are important, which seems to put me in an peculiar position. One of my friends is the same: he is a NRA life member and also a member of aclu. And I think that makes complete sense.

You see, some of the issues we are dealing with are -- in principle -- affecting others. Just replace the word "gun" with something else and it becomes another attack to the constitution. Have you heard of CISPA, just to name one of the alphabet soups? Have you seen its implications? And yet most republicans in the US house voted for it.

Another case is the thread http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=717232, which talks about mental health privacy, a civil liberty issue that is also a gun one.

It seems that We the People are being divided, labelled, and taught to hate those who do not fit in out comfortable drawer. So, like the old Jewish poem, we do not care when another group's liberties are taken as long as we perceive *our* interests are not touched. We are being divided and conquered. I am very naive: I think all of our liberties are important.

I do not know about you but I did contact my representatives to express my opinion on CISPA. I do need to do the same for the mental health privacy.

I know this does not make sense, and that explains the title.

The ACLU is in a pivotal position. They have completely ignored the Second Amendment for decades, and with the Heller ruling, they are being obviously selective about which civil rights for which they choose to fight. I think very soon, they will be forced to either embrace the Second Amendment and fight alongside SAF, or publicly confirm their true leftist leanings and continue to ignore it.

the ACLU has always fought for 'civil rights' only in a liberal context. They have sought to undermine free expression by way of political correctness, and I will have nothing to do with them.

I will not support the ACLU for the reasons listed above but I agree with the spirit of what you are saying. While we fight hard for the Second Amendment we need to be vigilant of and protect all amendments. I think there is an issue with "wuss-ifaction" in American with all the political correctness. You have the right to express your opinions and be who you are but you do not have the right to not be offended. Suck it up and move on. The whole PC movement I find ridiculous.

I do recall reading of a specific case in which a local ACLU branch did litigate for the pro 2A side. I cannot now remember the details. This is the only time that I can recall the ACLU taking a pro 2A position. Perhaps there were others I am unaware of. I do believe that the ACLU takes the position that the individual's constitutional rights are of the widest possible interpretation, except for the second ammendment. I have long felt that the ACLU as an organization, and at least some members, must suffer a cognitive dissonance over their pro individual rights/anti 2nd. Ammendment position...

The ACLU has also never litigated AGAINST the 2A that I recall. As a hunter - which also makes me a staunch conservationist, I have applauded the ACLU's work in certain environmental issues.

I have no problem with timber harvesting, or mining as long as things are put back the way they were (to the best degree possible) with the least amount of long-term damage.

It seems a little ironic how, now that some of the liberal news folks were/are caught up in the IRS debacle, how they are howling about the First Amendment, yet when we speak up about the Second, their hearing diminishes....

Problem with the ACLU is that they position they take on many issues is not supportive of rights for the majority of citizens. In AZ, Federal Court just ruled that Sherrif Joe was racially profiling during his work place enforcement raids. Problem is 99 percent of the illegal population is from Mexico. Pretty hard to not "target" a group when this is the case. ACLU is celebrating.

ACLU supported NAMBLA.......

(North American Man Boy Love Association)

I dont look to the ACLU for anything good....
