It is interesting that his lawyer characterized him as a "family man" and a "public servant". Most of us have the same traits, and their attempt at easing the reality of law for such a person of "higher moral standards" only makes our argument for us. Also, the fact he was traveling from one gun prohibited state to another is telling. I hope this case goes farther and raises us all up.

I picked up a .25 casing in my boot tread while walking around D.C. on a trip last year. The TSA lady understood how that might have happened, even though I could have been profiled by my high and tight haircut, duty belt and jump boots. Reasonable is as reasonable does.

Funny, I would never use that small caliber anyway.

Yeah, when I saw this at first I thought it was a classic gotcha.

Digging a little deeper I found a different story.

It is by the grace of God that this doesn't happen to any one of us who are around guns all the time. The gun, aside from Chicago's local prohibitions on handguns, was lawfully carried, unloaded and encased, per IL law. He forgot about it in his carry-on or briefcase.

This particular Senator, particularly in the last two years as his district now includes more areas some on the other side refer to as "redneckistan" has modified his position thanks to education and advocacy from pro-gun folks like Guns Save Life and the NRA.

Yes, he was very anti gun before.

Today, he voted for the over-ride against Gov. Quinn's draconian gun ban and indicated to Cullerton's office that he would vote for a right-to-carry bill when they polled the Dem caucus.

Today, Donne Trotter is a very gun-friendly Senator, again, thanks to advocacy and education, along with a little good old-fashioned holding his feet to the fire.

Let's not cannibalize him, okay?

Oh yeah, one other thing: Anita Alvarez let him sit in jail for 30 hours. You think that's gonna engender a lot of support for her planned anti-gun bills next session?

I am not above cutting a good guy a break, not because he is a politician, but for being just a good guy. However, something about this doesn't seem right.

1. The gun was not registered.

2. He said it was the gun he used as a security guard the night before and that is why he forgot it was in his bag. Who uses a .25 auto for security work???

I think he should get treated the same as a non-govt official would. Before a Judge, a person would probably be told they are responsibile for keeping track of their guns's locations, as Comus said.

I don't remember hearing this.

The only way to work around the ban on concealed carry here is to be a member of a security company and get approval. Which this Senator obviously did with his buddies security firm.

Sec. 24-2. Exemptions.
(a) Subsections 24-1(a)(3), 24-1(a)(4), 24-1(a)(10), and 24-1(a)(13) and Section 24-1.6 do not apply to or affect any of the following:

(5) Persons licensed as private security contractors, private detectives, or private alarm contractors, or employed by an agency certified by the Department of Professional Regulation, if their duties include the carrying of a weapon under the provisions of the Private Detective, Private Alarm, Private Security, Fingerprint Vendor, and Locksmith Act of 2004, while actually engaged in the performance of the duties of their employment or commuting between their homes and places of employment, provided that such commuting is accomplished within one hour from departure from home or place of employment, as the case may be. Persons exempted under this subdivision (a)(5) shall be required to have completed a course of study in firearms handling and training approved and supervised by the Department of Professional Regulation as prescribed by Section 28 of the Private Detective, Private Alarm, Private Security, Fingerprint Vendor, and Locksmith Act of 2004, prior to becoming eligible for this exemption. The Department of Professional Regulation shall provide suitable documentation demonstrating the successful completion of the prescribed firearms training. Such documentation shall be carried at all times when such persons are in possession of a concealable weapon.
