Former Senator, Presidential Candidate Carol Moseley Braun Injured in Chicago Mugging

Saturday, April 28, 2007
CHICAGO — Former U.S. senator and presidential candidate Carol Moseley Braun suffered a broken wrist when a mugger tried to steal her purse, authorities said Saturday.

Braun, 59, was standing at her front door late Friday when an assailant came out of the bushes and tried to take her purse, said her spokesman, Kevin Lampe. When Braun resisted, the man pulled a knife and cut the strap of the purse.

During the struggle, Braun fell, fracturing her left wrist. She was later treated and a released from a hospital.

A student from the nearby University of Chicago came to her aid, Lampe said.

Zachary Trayes-Gibson said he had been walking with a friend when he heard screams.

"I turned to look and saw a woman on the ground and a man on top of her assaulting her," Trayes-Gibson said. "It looked like he was throwing punches. I turned and ran toward them, and my friend yelled out 'Hey!' and he (the assailant) looked up."

After the attacker ran off, Trayes-Gibson was surprised to learn who he was helping.

"He is the hero of the day," Lampe said.

Braun's assailant fled the scene without the purse, Lampe said. He remained at large Saturday, said Chicago Police spokeswoman Officer JoAnn Taylor.

Braun, a Democrat, became the first black woman elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992, serving one term. She lost her re-election bid to Peter Fitzgerald in 1998. After her defeat, President Clinton appointed her ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa. She made a run for the presidency in 2004.

I wonder if this will change her gun views !!

Hey now, adding a gun to that situation would only have increased the violence! Why make a mugging worse by adding a shooting to it?

I thought it was "A liberal is a conservative who hasn't been mugged yet" as well as "A conservative is a libertarian who hasn't been arrested yet" :D

After the attacker ran off, Trayes-Gibson was surprised to learn who he was helping.

Surprised, as in "I didn't know she was a public figure", or surprised, as in "I wish I'd known she was a gun-banning Nazi before I helped her"?

No, the saying goes like this...
A liberal is a conservative who hasnt been mugged yet. (they are liberals but they will become conservatives when they get mugged- ie pro punishment, pro death penalty, pro RKBA, etc)
A conservative is a liberal who hasnt been arrested yet. (they are conservatives, but they will become pro-defendant and pro-due process once they experience first-hand how the criminal justice system works).

I personally dont see those two sides as being mutually exclusive. I'm all for due process and police/prosecutors following the rules but I'm also for severe punishments for the guilty because frankly they have it coming.

The day has finally come…

Knives are clearly a threat to our nation and must be banned immediately! Nationwide buy-back programs will now offer you a $50 Ruths-Chris Steakhouse gift card with every steak knife you turn in for immediate disposal. Oh wait…

LB...thank's (ugh..I orginially wrote that's) for clarifying. It's a little late for posting. Although it's conservative vs libertarian with the arrested one. At least that's how I have heard it.

I enjoyed the part about the guy having to leave without the purse. He couldn't even cut it loose. See if anyone messes with Carol Mosely Braun again.:D

I was curious about the references to who Mosely Braun was and came up with her as a one term Illinois Senator elected in 1992, followed by one term Senator Peter Fitzgerald, followed by Barak Obama. Mosely Braun and Obama immediately became Presidential candidates and I believe both were lone black Senators. Fitzgerald was infamous as an independent minded Republican and was hounded out by his own party to the point of not running for reelection, quite possibly for lack of funds, let alone popularity, considering his lack of support for Illinois pork projects.

Well, this is her opportunity for some reflection.

Maybe she'll see the light.

Maybe not.

FWIW, glad she lived to reflect on the matter.

Where was her limo driver? Shame we don't give lifetime Secret Service agents to former senators.:barf: :barf: :neener:
Wonder why she didn't hit him in the face. Maybe because he would hit back?

i wonder what was so important in her purse?

That she didn't give it up immediately? Yeah, good question. I wonder how Chicago society failed this poor woman by not teaching her that resistance is futile, to not struggle, and to give up any wallet or purse upon demand by an armed assailant.

What really stuns me is where this all happened. I mean, since firearms are so strictly regulated that there's a wonderful, almost opium-like, feeling of safety and security that radiates so powerfully that it even affects nearby cities.

+1 Geek. I'm glad that there was no opportunity for her to become further injured, no matter how cynical I am towards the situation as a whole.

That the victim of a mugging is anti-gun does not make it THR material. THR is not the editorial platform of the Daily Blat.

If the incident causes an epiphany and a change of political view, that's a different matter.
