Well I did some thinking, reading, and number crunching and decided that my first AR based rifle is going to be a Rock River Arms. I chose the Elite CAR A4, with a midlength gas system, 16" chrome lined barrel, and dominator mount. Yes I do plan for optics down the road.

I am certain that I will build my next one, once I understand this one completely.

Some reasons I decided on this one were the price, quality based on many reviews I have read, warranty, and location. I have a friend who is an FFL, and gave me a great deal. They have a lifetime warranty, and they are only a few hours away from where I live.

I ordered it a week ago, and was told there is a possible 5 week wait. My FFL dealer told me they have said this before and sometimes come earlier... so I plan for later and if it comes sooner I will be pleasantly surprised.

I ordered a Strip LULA speed loader and 4 black Pmags with the view window. Pmags arrived yesterday. I say that as I look at them now before using the gun, they look great. Seem to be extremely sturdy and tight. I do not plan to test them against a Chevy truck, I will take the video's word for it. ;)

I also bought three 20 round boxes of ammo... one Winchester, one Remington, and one Wolf. Going to try them and see what happens. I will probably eventually order some bulk brass loads online.

How do you guys handle waiting knowing something like this eventually coming to you?

The wait is hard, but in the end you should be happy. I have that carbine and have been very happy. I really like the mid-length gas system. The only problem that I have had was the staking on the gas key came loose pretty quick. The dominator mount works perfect with an Eotech and the Pmags are as good as what every one says about them.

If you think thats difficult you should try waiting for something from the CMP. Man that was hard. Maybe things have slown down there but when their carbines first came out there was a 3 month or more waiting list. Mine took just over 3 months. Then they really get you excited about a week before they send it when they send you an email telling you that your order is being processed. Thats when the wait gets almost unbearable.

I have the same rifle and love it. Works like a champ. Good call on the Pmags - for the price you can't beat them.

I read tons of reviews on the pmags. I figure I get them now before the gun gets here and be ready to go when it does. I only ordered 4 because that's all I could afford now, but I am sure once I start buying more ammunition I will get more mags.

As for the staking issue, I think I found somewhere a gas key staking tool that can be bought. I work on cars/engines/etc all the time so it's not beyond me to take it apart and have a look. I read up on what staking these parts actually means and it looks pretty simple, at least with regards to the gas key.

My FFL dealer actually ordered it, so he lets me know when he hears anything. He is really on the ball about keeping me up to date.

My dad ordered a Henry Repeater at the same time I ordered my RRA; and his came yesterday... that is a sweet sweet gun for one in its class.

I bought a midlength and I really like that style. ame size as the carbines but gives you more sight radius and more hand room.

Yeah, its easy to fix. Just keep an eye on it. There is a tool called the MOAKS and pocket MOAKS, but are pretty expensive.

Looks like a simple fix/preventative procedure. This is going to be my first AR, and there is a good chance I might build another one down the road.

I work on cars for a living, and am used to buying tools off the Matco and occasionally Snap-On truck. So I am somewhat familiar with paying more for a good quality tool that does exactly what it is supposed to do. Not that I have the cash to lay down now, $75 does not seem too bad for a specialized tool for a very precise firearm.

Thanks so much for the input and support. Cannot wait for my AR to arrive! I feel like I did when I was 10 years old waiting for Christmas morning! :)

Interestingly, my older RR Elite CAR A4 key was torqued and staked better than the key on my newer BCM BCG. Who would have guessed?

With good loads the scoped RR will keep 10 rd groups under 3/4 " @ 100 yds all day long.

I thought the bad job of staking gas keys by RRA was bunk until mine backed off and stopped the gun. I have two RRA firearms and I really like them, but their staking job is suspect. With that being said, they are good guns and have a tight fit. You will like it.

I put a 3x9 scope on my Elite for the first time last week, after always shooting with an Eotch or irons, and my handloads consistently shot .5-1 moa depending on the bullet. Some groups even better. Some groups slightly worse. Pretty good for a chrome lined barrel. I took one of my Mini-14's with me and shot my same handloads, and it was minute of joke as a comparison.

I wonder why they don't put as much into staking as others?

With regards to your scopes, I will have to see what happens down the road. The one I ordered will be ready for an eotech, but that will be down the line when I have $400-600 do drop on one. It does look like a wicked optic though.

5 weeks ain't nothing, try waiting for a Milt Sparks holster for your new carry gun!:D

Enjoy!!! when you get it;)

Don't worry about the staking. It sounds like you can handle it. There is probably a lot of bad staking going on.

The dominator mount was designed to raise the eotech just slightly above the sight picture of you iron sights. It is a nice piece.

I waited about 14 weeks for mine.

How long of a wait is that? Is it anything like waiting for Illinois to adopt a carry law?

I guess you wouldn't know, being from the communist state, just across the lake:D But 21 weeks last time I ordered.

Communist state, I like that, ha! I did not pick to live here, I was born here. I do plan on moving away some day sometime after my girlfriend and I get married. I have a lot of great friends here, but I tell you Illinois gets more ridiculous all the time, not with guns only, but definitely with guns.

21 weeks... I'll take my 5! :) Took more than that to stash away the $ to order the beast.

The only thing you poor souls get to carry, is a FOID card:cool:

You'll enjoy the RRA! I've got 2 of them, a Predator Pursuit and a LAR-9 CAR A4, both run flawless!

Don't get me started on the FOID card. Technically, that is infringing my right to bear arms if. Oye.

Well that is good to hear. I plan to take good care of it and hopefully use the heck out of it, and improve my skills with it.

You are lucky they got caught up. A few years ago the wait was much longer. I ordered a 9mm AR from RRA in Sept 08. It arrived in Aug 09.
