Any Beretta 92G guys around?

I just bought one at a local gun show. I'm guessing it was a police trade-in, because it has a fair bit of holster wear and the mags are marked police/government use only. It came with 3 mags for 400 plus tax. I'm just waiting my two days to pick it up. Does anyone have more information on these? I've been looking for a mid-level 9mm for plinking, and thought it would fill the bill nicely. On a side note: it's marked made in USA on the slide, I thought all Beretta's were made in Italy until very recently?

"Beretta USA" exists (for a long time now) because must be made in USA for those juicy military contracts

Fanky, we got several of the 92 G's in at our store some time back, so I picked one up too. There are some minor differences with the G series Berettas, but for the most part, they share the 92FS traits, and are solid shooters. I had several old FS mags that I stuck into my Bug Out Bag, and threw in the 92G to make sure I had a high cap pistol in it too.
I took some aluminum blacking and touched up my gun, and it looks like new again.

If you're looking for a collector gun, the G's are probably all pretty well used and not in that framework (unless somebody kept one in their desk). You can order a new FS if you want one "collector quality"... and if you want a good shooter, just load and fire. I love shooting the 92 Series Berettas...

Most of the police Beretta's are the D models or DAO but that doesnt mean yours isnt. The 92G's are nice in the sense theres a decocker but no safety. You should be able to contact Beretta and find out when your gun was made if youre curious.

Let us know how it shoots and post some pics.

The 92Gs are excellent carry guns. Their advantage over the 92FS is the de-cocker in place of the safety. The non-G models are the only guns where I teach releasing the slide solely with the slide stop, so that you don't inadvertently activate the safety.

The ultimate "G" is the 92 Elite model, as they also add the dovetailed sights and the beefed up slides

I liked my 96G (.40 S&W) enough to buy it (and put custom grips on it) when we switched to Glocks. They shoot nicely and are easy to control becasue of their mass. You should enjoy it.

Yours should be a 'retired' PD gun. According to my 'bible' (Standard Catalog of Firearms) the 'G' models were sold to Police Departments only. Mine is also a Beretta USA model that the Department bought in 1996. Different Departments bought different types of guns, actions and other features. The DAO was popular with departments because it was most similar to revolvers and there was a beleif that DAO was safer. There was enough interest in the traditional action (D/A followed by S/A) Decocker only guns for Beretta to make 2 models (92G & 96G) they only sold to Police.

The 'restricted' markings on the magazines mean they were made during the Clinton Magazine Ban days and carried more than 10 cartridges. Now that the ban has expired they are kosher again.
