Any classic riot gun better than the High Standard 18-7?

The old High Standards had a couple of drawbacks. The threaded-in barrel cost them a contract with the Air Force once upon a time that the 870 won, based pretty much on the ability to easily remove the 870 barrel - at least according to Swearengen.

The other drawback, perhaps more theoretical than real, is the single action bar. At least the HS action bar is pretty well designed and usually sufficiently robust, but I've been told a couple of lots had some metallurgy problems and apparently broke more easily than the run of the mill.

People who like High Standards tend to really like them a lot, and I can't really say anything much negative about them. I sure like mine (ex Cumberland County, NC SO) a lot. But I'll still stick with an 870 when the chips are down, given a choice. I wouldn't complain if all I could get was the High Standard though. It's still the slickest pumpgun action around.

BTW, if anyone wants one, I saw some listed at Summit the other day - http://www.summitgunbroker.com/High_Standard_Riot.html

I would place the Model 12 and the Ithica 37 above the High Standard in terms of quality, smoothness of action, longevity, and long term reliability.

Me, i'm and old 870 Guy.. but it looks to me like you have a pair of really nice shotguns.. I would not say no to either of them...

When it comes to the old whizzin matches over which is best, we can talk all kinds of design/ergonomics/Etc..etc... The fact of it is, Hi-Standard in the day, had some pretty high standards.. they made very good guns.. well maintained, and properly serviced, they will serve you just fine...

It's kinda like, which is the better Ice Cream... Well my friend, that is why Baskins and Robbins serves 31 flavors...

The short answer is no - nothing stands out tall against the Hi-Std .

If its not the best, it is certainly in the top pair as far as my experience with owning a couple of them. And gun for gun being the slickest action, it is number one.

Well, yeah.
Remington & Mossberg both come to mind, and I have owned a High Standard.

Only the Winchester Model 12 in my opinion, and that's just because it can takedown into a tiny package that can fit in a briefcase. I want one of those so bad... and I mean, tempted to get one and have it shortened kind of bad, although I think that might be sacrilegeous!

Now tell me you have a Colt Official Police to go with that High Standard? Or better yet, a 1917? :D

Never had one, but yours are beautiful.

There is something about old cop shotguns that call to me.
I just wish I had been born rich instead of so damn handsome.
