High Standard Riot 18-7 shotgun

Hi,I've had this shotgun for years,and have only shot 00 buck,and BB shot.This shotgun was police issue in the 70's.One of the officers from the department that had my gun,said I could use regular solid shot also.Never shot any though.I've read some articles on line and some say you can shoot solid balls,others say you can't.Can anyone answer this question for me? It's a High Standard 18-7 Riot Model K-120. Does it have a modified choke or a improved cylinder choke?I know a modified,you shouldn't shoot solid out of,could ruin the barrel,I don't want to do that.My thanks to anyone who can help me.I'm new to High Road and looking forward to talking to and reading about guns and so on.

Slugs will not hurt your High Standard, even through a full choke. Accuracy may be iffy, though.

Solid balls and slugs are two different animals, but I have never seen any solid ball ammo so he was probably talking about slugs. Dave gave you the straight dope.
Somewhere it should have the choke marked on the barrel. Cyl., Imp. Cyl., etc.

I don't have a lot of experience with High Standard riot guns (I only have two of them), but more than likely it's a CYL bore. A quick check with calipers should tell you what the bore diameter is at the muzzle, that will give you some idea what choke if any it has. The High Standard here that I can get to right now is a K-102 that was sold as surplus from the Cumberland Co., NC SO several years back. It has a 20" barrel that has no choke markings at all, the barrel is stamped FLITE KING Riot Model K-102 High Standard Hamden, Conn. USA.

At any rate, no matter what choke your 18-7 (18" barrel, 7 round capacity) is, there should be no problem shooting rifled slugs through it. Rifled slugs are different from solid balls (punkin' balls, as they were known back in AL) and have 'fins' or ribs which allow them to compress through chokes if such are encountered. I like Brenneke KO slugs a lot, they shoot well in all the guns I've tried them in so far.

High Standard Riot

Thank you Gents,I guess the pumpkin ball/slug shows my age.That's what we called slugs when I was a kid.I didn't know though,that I could use a rifled slug in this gun.To be honest,I'll probably keep the 00buckshot for ammo.This was the only thing I didn't know about my gun.I almost put my eye out when I unscrewed the cap on the magazine,quite the spring in there !Yep ,and the barrel doesn't come off....Thanks again guys,I'm looking forward to reading and learning more.

Yep, the barrels are screwed into the receivers on the older High Standards and don't detach like later designs. That cost High Standard a military contract with the Air Force back in the 1960s too, so Swearengen* says anyway. They chose the Remington 870 mainly because the barrel could easily be removed for inspection/cleaning.
