Hello,
I'm new to the board and if this is something that should not be asked or posted sorry...

I'm New to this Board and to Colorado (Colo. Springs/Fort Carson) and I dont know anyone that shoots Pistols or Rifles.

I wanted to know if there were any find of Get togethers or Shooting Clubs that are open to the Public.I have seen (Website) and herd of "The Ben Lomond Gun Club" but I was told that there is a long waiting list and unless I knew someone then it would be yrs before I'd get a chance (I dont know this ask a fact,I was told by a GunSmith here in Town).

So the only place I have to shoot is on Base (1-400meter Range) but I can only go on the weekends and when my Wife is up to it.She has to go with me as she is the Active Duty member and has to sign for the Range,........So..."No Wife-No Shooting"

Is there any members that know of an Open Range that I could shoot at without the Wife (She shoots also,Rem. 700 CDL .30-06).

Sorry for the long drawn out post.

There's several places to shoot 'round here.

http://ppfc.org/ranges.htm

Rampart Range is free, but kinda dirty (and no range officer so if idiots show up ... :uhoh: ). If you go up please pack out your trash (the Forest Service is always threatening to shut it down).

Dragon Man's place is interesting (take a tour of his machine gun museum). Its not a bad place to shoot, but I don't like it that much (no shade, so bring lots of water).

Not on that list is Frontier Sportsman's Club
I've been on the waiting list since February but I've been told that they may expand their membership by more than the number of folk on the list (they're also opening a new range soon...if they haven't already).

Also there's an indoor range at the Olympic Training Center ... but its .22lr only (bullseye shooting).

Oh yeah, welcome to THR and CO :D

Wow! I would not have thought about neighbors. I live in Security, Just a couple of miles from the main gate of Ft. Carson.

Thanks for the Replies and Links..

Zundfolge and jhco50,
I live just to the side of the New Lowes and Mesa Ridge High School.

If Ya'll ever want to get a cup of Coffee/Coke,BS or go to the range let me know..

I live about 5 minutes from you and belong to Frontier. If you ever want to see the range let me know and we can go and put a few rounds down range.

we have a new range that belongs to the same club going in south out of fountain. The pistol range should be close to being done from what I hear.

If you are going to be stationed here for a few years I would suggest getting a application in with frontier sportsman club and they renew the new memberships in like march or april. If you do not get on the list now you will most likely have no chance to get in if you wait. They have discused opening up more memberships when the new range opens also so do not wait.

Like I said I am close to you and would be more than happy to show you the place. Just contact Mr. Hickman at 633-4680 m-s 9-6 as he is the membership director.

I work at Evans and being a civilian I can not use any of the ranges on the base.
Call me at 393-0082 and we can go get a cup of coffee.
Jon

Welcome to CO. Last time I was in Paradise Sales (gun store on Colorado Ave), they told me about a public range south of town, just north of Penrose. Haven't been there yet, and can't recall the name (gee, I'm a lot of help, aren't I?). But a call to Paradise would tell you.

Edit: Here's a link to the DOW's range list for our area. Looks like the one I was thinking of is "Cactus Flats", and I was specifically talking about shooting handguns with the guys at Paradise.

As far as I know, Dragon Man's 200-yd range is the longest one open to the public. It's definitely a 'no-frills' range. But call and ask about a tour of his military museum. It's a heckuva lot more than just machine guns, and very impressive. Last time I was at the range, the 'Dragon Man' himself came out and offered a free tour to anyone who was interested.

Zundfolge pretty much nailed it. If you're interested in either Frontier or the club at the Olympic Training Center, let me know. There are groups that shoot smallbore pistol and rifle there, and they regularly hold competitions in 10 Meter Air Pistol, International Standard Pistol, Free Pistol, 10 Meter Air Rifle, and 50 Meter smallbore rifle.

There's also a nice club about midway between Fountain and Pueblo called Pueblo West Sportman's Club. They hold IPSC and IDPA matches, as well as tactical rifle matches there regularly.

As for gunstores, the best one in town is Specialty Sports.

"The Ben Lomond Gun Club" but I was told that there is a long waiting list and unless I knew someone then it would be yrs before I'd get a chance (I dont know this ask a fact,I was told by a GunSmith here in Town).

That range is pretty far from where you live. Until about 5 months ago I lived about 10 miles from that range. Pretty nice, but out in the middle of nowhere. As far as the waiting period goes, I dont really know. I have been there only as an invited guest and as an IPSIC spectator.

If you're willing to travel a couple of hours into the scenic Colorado mountains, you should check out the Friends of the NRA range in Salida. Very nice and generally well cared for rifle range with backstops for paper targets at 100, 200 and 300 yards plus a wide variety of steel targets starting at 200 yards and going all the way out to 1000 yards. Covered shooting area. They've also got two separate pistol ranges and a shotgun range.

My wife and I drive down there from Denver for a weekend of shooting with great regularity because it's so much nicer than most other places ... and she loves the long distance stuff.

This is amazing! All of us are neighbors? We should all get together and drink a cup of coffee. BTW, you can shoot on Mt. Herman as long as you are 4 miles above Monument. If you go to the top of Gold Camp Road, you can find some places to shoot as well.

I have access to a free chat that doesn't require a signup if you fellas want to get together on it one night. Let me know.

I have a straightrazor group that meets there every Monday night at 7:00pm and we usually end up talking guns and hunting. :D It is located at a friends website... http://www.redtrader99.com/chat.html

Not anymore Justin, check out Sportsmans Warehouse.

Welcome to Colorado! What you were told is not true at all. I'm a member of Ben Lomond. Each chapter of the club meets monthly and we vote new members in at almost every meeting. The Ben Lomond range is about 45 miles from Colorado Springs, off Hwy 24, north of the little town of Ramah. If you become a member, you can even camp at the range. There's a Colorado Springs chapter of the club (I'm in the Franktown chapter). Here's a link to the website: http://www.blgc.org/

Keep an eye on the "Rallying Point" forum ... we've been havin' a shindig about once a year at Larry's place in Pueblo (you just missed this years ...was a couple of weeks ago). http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=214051

Also there's going to be a NATIONAL THR Get Together at the Whittington Center next May (Raton, NM ... not that bad a drive).

Thanks for the Welcome everyone
and
Thanks for the Help on Gun Clubs.

We should try to get together and have a local High Roads Chapter meeting or a Gun sharing day...

Thanks Zundfolge,
NATIONAL THR Get Together at the Whittington Center

I found that and added myself to the list to be there.

Not anymore Justin, check out Sportsmans Warehouse.

Sportsman's Warehouse has some good stuff, no doubt about that, but for shear volume and quantity of cool guns in stock, Specialty's still where it's at, especially for handguns.
