I have most of my ammo locked in a cabinet in my garage and was wondering if there is any risk of damage occuring to the ammo from cold weather. I live in southwest Ohio and it does not get excessively cold, but it still does get pretty cold. Someone was telling me today that cold weather can damage the ammo, is there any truth to this?

I would think that as long as the storage container was free from moisture, you should be OK. GI ammo cans would work fine for this. Just check the rubber seal around the lid to make sure it's not cracked or broken so the seal will be airtight.

Military ammo tends to be made a little tougher. For one thing, they tend to be individually sealed.

In extreme cold, you don't really have to worry about moisture as much, the air will be extremely dry. GI cans keep more than just moisture out.

I think I'd be more worried about repeated hot/cold cycles loosening the bullet seating.

Heating and cooling and heating and cooling and heating and cooling aren't good for ammunition. If you don't keep ammunition in the garage longer than fifty years, it'll probably be all right.

Do NOT store ammo in your garage!

You wife will see how much you have and get upset. ;)
