I can't get my mind off of Ed Brown 1911's. I'm thinking of selling a couple of guns to finance one. I love 1911's in 45 cal and own colts, SA, Kimber and others.

Are there any owners of the Ed Brown current production line that can recommend or not spending the $2200 plus for one.

I would like to add one to set beside my Rolex GMT as illustrated in their ad.
Just kidding! I want one high end 1911 but is it worth it?

Thanks

DAve

It won't shoot any better than a $600 Springfield, so I say no. If you ever sell it you won't get near what you have in it. Exspensive guns have terrible resale and are slow movers.

Absolutely the finest 1911 I've ever owned. Beg to differ about the Springfield and the Ed Brown---I'm guessing he hasn't shot both. BTW, try pricing a used EB and see what it costs. The craftmanship is 2nd to none. Try going to 1911forum.com for much more info.

If you can swing it, go for it.

You will not be using the Kimbers, SAs, Colts, or much of anything else after you get a Brown, so you can sell off most of them.

You WILL be spoiled if you buy one and shoot it. You WILL look at 1911s differently afterwards.

I have an EB Special Forces. I hate then name, and love the gun. Hand's down my favorite carry pistol. p.s. you can now get them without the "Special Forces" engraving (ditto for other lines).

Dave,
I agree with Bob. If you can afford it, Go For It!! I happen to prefer Wilson guns and service but Brown's guns are also very good. Pick the one you like best. I have a Kimber Custom Eclipse II from the Kimber Custom Shop. After getting my first Wilson, the Kimber hasn't been shot in over two years! I have just ordered my third Wilson pistol for delivery in early Feb. Be warned. Buying a Wilson or Brown pistol will expose you to a very contagious disease, Wilsonitis or Brownitis. You will begin to look for reasons to buy another, and another, ...

I shoot a standardized practice round of 50 shots at 25 yds. For a six month period with the Kimber my scores ranged from 470-479 and averaged 475. When I switched to the Wilson, my scores began climbing quickly. After six months, I was shooting scores of 490+. My last five scorable targets were 497, 495, 498, 495, and 495. I think the 20 point difference is because of the superiority of Wilson pistol. At nearly 68 years of age, I don't think I suddenly gained that much skill after having shot pistols for many years, including some Bullseye competition.

Good shooting and be safe.

I have not been able to do more than hand a Brown. They do feel like very well made guns w/ top notch workmanship and parts. I have used high end customs tho and it does leave on demanding more from their guns....
If I could swing a EB, I'd probably get one :D

Now it's Wilson too!

About the time I think I found the ultimate in 1911's now I see Wilson's web site. Seems $2200 on their site is there cheaper offering!

I guess this 1911 stuff is like sail boats, airplanes, camera gear etc. with someone out there with something bigger and better.

The Brown still sounds like there's not many ways to go better.

When I was an Air Force Small Arms Instructor at the USAFA (1973-1977) we had team 1911's that were built at Lackland AFB by the Air Force Gunsmith School (General Lemay's baby). The Air Force gunsmiths would start with Colt Gold Cups. They would gut them and start over with all new hand fitted parts.

We had about 100 of those in lockers. I wonder where they are today? Talk about beautiful workmanship! We were instructed to never take them apart for cleaning etc. as the wear in take down was not allowed.

how about another contender?

When I was looking to get into getting a high end 1991, through friends, I had the opportunity to fire Baer's, Kimber's, and Wilson's.

I ended up getting a Nighthawk Custom GRP w/Diamond Black finish. I took the group of friends to the range and let them have at my NHC. I ended up making a few converts (ok *I* didn't end up making the converts the NHC did).

But, since you are looking at the same price range, its an option you may want to look into.

NHC, is a few of the guys from Wilson who broke from the company went across town and started up thier own shop.

Don't own one...

But have shot two. A cobra cary and a special fotces, and wow, they are great. they are every thing that a 1911 should be with out all the extra BS. Would buy one in a heart beat if I had the cash.

As soon as the next lottery ticket hits, that's what I wanna get... I expect it any day now. :)

I've got an Executive Target.

Without a doubt in my mind, the best handgun I've ever put my hands on and I've played with STI, Wilson, Colt, Kimber and Springfield. The only gun that comes close is a Springfield Custom Shop piece that costs nearly the same amount of change...and for that amount, I'd prefer to say I proudly own a Brown.

Accurate, reliable and a true piece of craftsmanship from day one.

I wouldn't hesitate to spend the money for a second one.

Biggums, I have a Kobra Carry. Ordered direct from Ed. I've owned about a dozen 1911s since the early 1980s. Most were rock solid and reliable. Still have six of them. I've only had two semi custom guns, though. One was a Wilson CQB and the other was the Ed Brown Kobra Carry. The Kobra Carry is, bar none, the worst gun I own, or have ever owned, and customer service is the worst I've ever experienced. It's the classic jamomatic, and that's with 230 grain FMJ ammo from top flight companies. When it does fire, it sends brass flying in random directions, often directly at my face, so that I am in almost as much danger as anyone I might be shooting at in self defense. Needless to say, I would never carry this piece of junk. I sent it back, and he sent it right back to me telling me he looked at it and everything was in spec, i.e., it's all in my head. If you'd like to buy an Ed Brown pistol, I have one I would be willing to let you have at a bargain price. Only about 1500 rounds through it.
