I'm thinking about buying one of the new Ruger 22/45's , perferably in SS, has anyone any experience with these pistols? Hows the reliability, ease of takedown compared to the MK II, accuracy?etc......

Nice gun, more combat pistol type grip.

They use the same take down as the MKII, but the fit isn't as tight (plastic on metal has some give) so it's easier to assemble. Good gun, cheaper than the MKII.

Good guns, I have three of them at this time (22/45's) I also have an older MK1 and 2 MK2's. Cannot beat the Rugers.

(1) MK1-5.5 inch bull barrel

(2) MK2 5.5 inch bull barrel's (planning on getting one of these suppressed)

(1) 22/45 4 inch bull barrel

(1) 22/45 5.5 inch bull barrel

(1) 22/45 8 inch barrel

Just shot mine yesterday

I have the stainless with the heavy barrel. Very accurate. Only malfunctions are to blame on .22 ammo.

The only hitch in the pistol is getting it back together. There is a little "thingy" that has to swing into position to get the "doohickey" to shut on the rear of the grip. It will take you about 10 minutes to learn.

I've tried to shoot it dirty until it failed. I got bored and gave up.

I think the 22/45 is the best buy in the .22 market. Go with stainless and get the heavy barrel.

I like it much better than the Browning Buckmark and the Colt with the steep grip angle. It is also nice to use your thumb to drop the mag instead of one of those Euro releases on the Mk II.

I painted my front sight bright orange. Here is the trick. Use paint for fishing jigs. It is waterproof -- duh!!! Apply a white layer first and let it dry. Then use a second coat of bright orange. You can then put the orange sight on target and let her fly.

I shoot at a range that allows rapid-fire shooting. You'd be surprised how fast you can empty one out.

Jaegermeister, why would you recommend the bull barrel, more accurate? How much $ more than the regular tapered barrel?

Thanks everyone for all the input.

Cratz,

The 22/45 is a variation on the other Ruger .22s, the MKI and MKII.

I would recommend the bull barrel 5". Good size, great accuracy and comes with adjustable sights. I don't think it really costs much more.

I have a MKII a 22/45 and had another MKII. They are all the same in terms of accuracy as far as I can tell and they are all good guns. If the 22/45 feels better in your hand, get it.

I have the 5" bull barrel. It's the only gun I have that comes along on every trip to the range.

Good guns, everytime I get one, I get talked into selling it.

My favorite is the P4, the 4" blue bull bbl, I shoot this better than the 5.5" (go figure), taken lots of small game--especially squirrel.
I use the Iron sights.

For me the blued Rugers seem to be more accurate than the stainless 22/45. Actually I have had only one stainless Ruger (KM512-I think) that was as accurate and reliable as any Ruger blue. Just me I guess.

Since we have a couple of 22/45's for students to use ,giving me access to one, I'm not replacing mine.

After taking squirels and such this past fall with a plain Jane fixed sighted standard model, that's what I'll get next. Grip a bit wider, forgot how fun 'simple' can be --will miss mag release, but maybe won't get talked into selling this one.

I've had one for a couple of years. I've used it to teach at least six new shooters, put over 10,000 rounds thru it and have dry fired it thousands more. Other than taking some practice to strip and clean I can't think of a single negative. I like the 22/45 over the MKll because of the 1911 lay out of the controls. Twelve round mags are out there for the MKll if that makes any difference to you.

3 gun

precisely why I keep getting talked into selling mine, they always work.
Well -the last one was a cute blond with green eyes...I had been teaching...nah...couldn't have had a thing to do with it. ;)

they are a whale of a lot of gun for the money. So accurate I just can't go on shooting it with the cruddy sights that came on it; I'm going with a red-dot (ordered from Jack Weigand yesterday), and I fully expect to have a hoot with it. Really, it's the next best thing to shooing a lazer.

It wasn't, the poster was just stating what he owned. "an older MKI..."

I've had a MK II for years & many 1000's of problem free rounds. A buddy of mine recently picked up a 22/45 simply for the grip mag release  After the first 1000 rounds, the only thing he's not happy w/ is loading the mags. A thumbsaver has ixed that problem :)

for loading the mags, I can't say how easy the ultimate clip loader is!!

I got it for Christmas and love it. I was of course a bit sceptical of how easily it would really load, but it really is just dump in rounds, shake around a bit, and insert a clip!!

you never have to touch the rounds....

Another vote for the 22/45....nicest 22 pistol I have ever layed my hands on.

Specifically I vote fot the p-512 model, shown below...blued, bull barrel.

I adore mine - awesome little pistol. Just don't drop it on the rear of the slide when the slide is locked bak - it makes the slide lock stick something awful.

No, I didn't drop it, one of my students did - and after working itself back in, the slide lock works fairly smoothly again. In the meantime, the gun is a tack driver with an awesome trigger, and never has a single problem that's not traceable to ammo.

I haven't shot the 22/45, but I recently picked up a MKII. I personally found that the MKII fit my hand a little better.

From what I understand the two guns perform virtually identically.
