Thinking about buying a Ruger .45, but have 0 experience with them. Have been told by a lot of people that the Ruger 9MM pistols are very reliable and dependable. How do the .45 pistols compare?

Which one? The P97 is a polymer frame model, the P90 has an aluminum frame. There are some internal differences as well. Ruger's upcoming new autoloader is a California .45.

My P90 goes bang every time.

When I first had it I had some feeding problems. Once per box or so, the last round in a magazine would hang the slide slightly out of battery. I've seen other reports in Internet gunforum-land of the same thing happening. I did some polishing and put in a heavier recoil spring. That fixed it, and I've gone many, many rounds with no problem.

The P97 has an improved trigger, but the P90 seems to have slightly better build quality. Not that build quality is a problem. Ruger .45s appear to be some of the most reliable autoloaders on the market and people that have them swear by them.

I considered one but went with a Glock 21 instead. The Glock fit my hand much better. I found the controls difficult to operate on the Ruger, much more so than on the 9mm Rugers.

On the other hand, I found a new P97 for $319 at Sportsman's Warehouse. The cheapest price on a G21 was over $200 more than that. (I bought my G21 used for a price much closer to the price of the new Ruger.)

As long as it fits your hand well you should really like the Ruger .45's. They're too often overlooked.

For the money they are hard to beat. My buddy has the 97 and loves it. He has a G21 and can never decide which one he likes better. I am a little biased I like the Ruger.

I have the KP-90 .45ACP (stainless steel uppers on alloy frame) with over 2K rounds. Only issue was with some UMC brand ammo.

Other than that, has gone BANG! every time I mashed the trigger. No feed issues with any HP ammo I have tried, either.

I did install the Hogue grip on it, less than $20.

I love my P90. I've been told that it was developed for the 10mm round, but converted to .45 when the 10mm didn't become the fad that many thought it would be. So, you shouldn't be able to wear it out. Mine doesn't like Winchester WinClean ammo, but devours everything else it gets near.

Has anyone done a 10mm conversion on a Ruger? I'm looking for a 10mm handgun, but just don't see anything I really like.

The P90 is a great pistol for nightstand use, or exposed carry. It goes bang, has second strike capability, is simple to take down, and is beefy and tolerant of bad reloads (don't ask). For concealment, it's similar to stuffing a watermelon in your pants IMHO. It's very wide in the slide.

Like the above post says, it was made to take the 10 mm cartrage and you can shoot this gun till the cows come home and it will still take more rds of .45...

I've got a P90 .45 and wouldnt trade it for the world,
It's my home gun to protect my family and I have alot of confidence in it...

Also, I dont think you'll find a more reliable, durable pistol out there that'll feed anything....

Dont let the price fool ya, its a great defense gun as long as your not going to CCW with it.....

Also its very clunking compared to other guns but I find it very accurate......drf

Ruger P-series pistols are designed to be tough and for the money, very accurate. I have a P89 and it is my home defense pistol. I have shot a manual safety P90 and it's a very good pistol and more accurate than I am. The versions with the Hogue grips already installed (H after model #) are the ones to get. Hogue did a great job with Ruger in getting the grips to make the pistol fit easily in your hand.

Ruger states in their instruction manual that their "P-series pistols are compatible with all factory ammunition loaded to US industry standars, including high-velocity and hollow-point loads, loaded in brass, aluminum, or steel cartridge caes. No 9mm x 19, .45ACP or .40 S&W ammo made in accordance with NATO, US, SAMMI, or CIP standards is known to be beyond the design limits or known not to function in these pistols." That says a lot about the strength of Ruger pistols and Ruger customer service is supposed to be fantastic. Hopefully, I'll never have to find out but knowing that a company will bend over backwards to support their product is a pretty good deal to me.
