Hi All,

I am looking for places within a reasonable drive of Sussex County, NJ to hunt groundhogs and or woodchucks with a rifle. Does anyone hear have varmints they need exterminated this spring? Does anyone have any leads to find places. I would be wiling to go into NY state or Eastern, PA. Hey I'd love to find something in NJ!

I have been told to drive out into the country and knock on doors, but that just seems a little bit like finding a needle in a haystack.

Please send me a PM or just respond to this thread if this is of interest to you. Of course, we would need to talk and or meet ahead of time to gain a mutual understanding.

I will respect your land by leaving it as found, not climbing fences, leaving gates as is and practicing responsible gun handling.

Thank you for your time!

Chris

With New Jersey and New York gun laws as they are, a landowner would be crazy to let you hunt on their land, and you'd be crazy to do it. You're seriously asking to be hauled off to jail and lose your firearms rights. Go south, where the free world awaits you.

That's not so, Wardenwolf, at least not in NYS. Why would one lose their rights and/or get hauled off to jail? If you're referring to issues of liability, NYS has a General Obligations Law that holds the landowner harmless in these matters, so long as no fees are charged for hunting. NYS encourages hunting---just not near the Big Apple.

And do you really think that "going south" is a reasonable drive from Sussex, New Jersey?

Sleazy, thanks for chiming in!

Today I contacted the Farm Bureau for Susquehanna County, PA and spoke with a very nice person. I also followed up with a letter kindly asking for any leads. I also got a lead to call a gentlemen at one of the Sportsmen's Associations.

I am not looking for any free rides here. I just want to get pointed in the right direction before driving two hours from home and aimlessly knocking on doors.

Appreciate any other feedback.

THe key is knowing people who knows someone out there. Most landowners are no longer as open like the good days. WIth increasing crimes nowadays , no one want s to deal with the unknown.

Remember the case of Elizabeth Smart of Utah ? Her dad was naive enough to let a stranger get into his house and thus her daughter was kidnapped . Never trust strangers are what most landowners are concern .

NJ does allow rifle hunts for varmints as long as the caliber is below .30 cal. Trouble is finding open land in the most densely populated state in the country.

People are getting crazy!
