So I am here in Boise for a few days, thought I would check out a gun store or two since I am considering moving here.

I know there is a Cabela's here, but I wouldn't buy anything from Cabela's unless it was an unbeatable price. Nice stores to just browse in though.

How is Impact Guns? I have heard people complain about buying from them online, but how about in person?

Depends on what you want.

Impact is all right. Some interesting stuff, not as much of a big-time browsing store. Very cool if you want to buy suppressors from right there under the counter display.:)

Boise Gun Company is amazing for browsing, especially if you are not only interested in tacticool. http://www.boisegun.com/ I'd go there, myself.

Cliff's Guns, Safes and Reloading is also worth a browse: http://www.cliffsgsr.biz/ They also have the best local radio ads. Absolutely wonderful reloading supplies, but I doubt you want to haul those back in large quantities.

If you get up to Horseshoe Bend, check out Ponderosa, on the highway past town.

Thanks.

I heard about Boise Gun Company, i'll try to check that out.

Boise is a pretty sweet place. Kinda like Bakersfield, CA except with snow and a better group of people.Just the thing I am looking for, a home away from home. :D

Living expenses are pretty low too from what I can tell.

Still trying to keep this gun related, when/if I become a resident, how does buying guns in other states work (i.e. Utah, Oregon, Montana, Washington?) Or can you even do that? Sorry CA boy here so I am only exposed to red tape and nanny laws :(

Idaho allows long gun sales to any legal US resident.

Neighboring states typically sell to Idahoans, no problem.

Tom at ESE gunsmiths in Emmett is nice, small place good service and a nice place to hang and talk weapons, worth the trip there and fair on pricing, lot of folks in and out of the shop.

Wait, so if I am a CA resident I can buy a gun here in ID? That is pretty darn awesome.

Except it would be kind of difficult to try and cram a rifle into my checked baggage and then explain to my family why I threw out all my clothes to make room for magazines and ammo.

**Oh, and it looks like I might start buying the more expensive guns in Oregon while visiting granny, since there is no sales tax.

I believe long guns can only be sold to a resident from a neighboring state. Also, check out Sportsman's Warehouse on Eagle road in Meridian.

Maybe you can, but you would be breaking California law. Catch-22.

Yeah just hypothesizin'. Really want nothing to do with that commie state.

Well thanks for your help. Now I just have to hope my application to BSU gets accepted. Of course, I could just move here anyway.

also, there is a gun show at the Fairgrounds

There is a gun show at the fairgrounds in Garden City over this weekend. Great browsing and good company but usually not very good prices.

Boise gun co has too much of a selection for their size of store. Guns are literally laying on top of each other. They salesmans really dont give average customer the time of day. I'll go there to get a feel for a gun and they buy or order it from another shop.

Cliff's is good but make sure to deal with his wife. Hes not a very tactful person and comes off grumpy.

Ive had very good luck at Impact guns. Bought a few from them and they have a lifetime warranty on their guns. I think they will pay warranty cost if the manufacturer doesnt offer it or pay shipping if the guns covered under the warranty.

My favorite is Buckhorn. Ive bought about a half dozen firearms from them. Guys are very knowledgable and polite. Bought my first gun at 18(24 now) from there and they treated me as if i was a regular customer(i was really young looking for my age and probably didnt look a day over 15).

LT1 is correct about Boise gun shop, stacked everywhere, they do need a bigger place,
never dealt with Cliffs, but nothing wrong with being grumpy, grumpy is OK, A grumpy
a-hole and such, now that is not OK, you can be grumpy and still be a good person,JMO

IdahoLT1 - "My favorite is Buckhorn. "

This weekend, the Boise Gun Show is in progress at the Fairgrounds. Buckhorn Guns always has at least 12 tables choked with guns, so I doubt you'd find too much at their store on Ustick Ave. Hit the gunshow if you have a chance. Sunday hours are 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

Boise Gun co is nice, but like said above your knocking them down to get to the one you want. I hear Cliffs is good but not been. Sportsmans has a good long gun selection but lacking on pistols. Impact I find is over priced.

As far as out of state purchases. I think long guns only to adjacent states and no handguns out of state.

Forgot to add, Mountain Sports gun shop/pawn shop in Mountain Home is pretty good too. Lots of used rifles/shotguns. some pistols etc and a decent selection of new too for a small town. Plus they will order whatever you want and a price that is competitive. Good guys too.

I was in Boise a couple of months ago, for much the reason you are.....job offer. Unfortunately mine didn't work out, but we really liked the town. I visited a few gun stores when I was there & was pretty impressed, especially with Cliffs'. Their reloading department takes up half of the store & was far better than anything that I know of here in the Seattle area. If you are into older guns like me be sure to take a look in the back room (office/storage) were they have some older stuff for sale. Also the regular firearms department room is well stocked & prices looked pretty decent.
Buckhorn was a neat store, too. Very friendly people & a good range of older 'collectibles' & newer guns. Pretty classy looking store, not real big but nicely layed out.
Boise Gun is just the opposite to Buckhorn.....looks like a gun rummage sale! Really hard to get a decent look at anything & stuff piled on top of each other. Staff didn't seem overly helpful, but they were pretty busy & I was there on a weekday morning.
Really wish we could have made the move to Boise, seems like a real gun-friendly town. Lots of shooting clubs/ranges in the area too.

Thanks again for all the replies.

I don't feel like I should start another thread for this but, what is your favorite shooting range in the area? I like to shoot rifles, pistols and shotguns. So rifle ranges that go past 300 yards, and shotgun ranges that do trap/skeet.

Another question, I have a friend in Oregon who wants to sell me a Glock 17 for really cheap. It can be a under the table transfer correct? In CA selling any firearm requires going to a dealer and filling out a form which is very annoying.

Ranges, we dont need no ranges. Just drive out of town and set up your targets. But please clean up after you are done, too many out here still leave a mess and ruin it for others. I leave Mt Home and can shoot in just a few minutes and at ranges WELL over 300 yards. I dont know Oregon's laws but in Idaho buy and sell what you want, no going to a dealer or fee's.

If you want an indoor range I hear Impact has a nice one. And ArmedBear will let you know where to go for trap/skeet/clays as I think he competes or at least shoots a lot at clays.

Wow, I can just drive a few minutes out of town and start shooting w/o any trouble from authorities? This truly is land of the free. Gonna go on a shopping spree when I become a resident too. Get all the nice evil features I want w/o a 10 day wait period.

Uhhhh, that's illegal. A handgun can only legally be sold in Idaho to another Idaho resident. Non-resident handgun sales, State to State, must go through an FFL.

Yes and no. if you have targets set up and are shooting at them, you'll be fine. If you are walking around the desert and shooting at "sage brush", expect to be questioned by F&G. They will ask to see your hunting liscense because alot of ground squirrel/rabbit/badger shooters used this excuse. Although there is no season for them(non game species), you still need a hunting liscense to shoot them.

But in the couple hundred times ive been shooting South of Boise, ive only been stopped once. The officer said they only have 6 officers(3-4 years ago) to patrol Ada, Canyon, Elmore and Ohwyhee county during the late spring/early summer. Those counties cover over 12,000 square miles so its likely youll never see them.

But if you do shoot south of Boise be careful of the National Guard. They do alot of maneuvering about 10-15 miles south of town. They have a large tower on a hill out there(Christmas Mountain) and watch for shooters. This mountain is encompassed by a road that is off limits to civilian shooters. Its where the guard maneuvers. Ive been politely asked to shoot somewhere else 2 times, which is reasonable. I usually shoot into a burm but their troops were ~2 miles behind that burm, so i didnt see them. There have been a couple reports of idiot shooters taking pop shots at their tanks(not a good idea). The soldiers reporting hearing bullet hit them. So beware of some of the Darwin candidates out there.

One time i was reloading a couple mags after shooting into a hillside and i heard the loudest explosion ive ever heard in my life. It shook me and i almost dropped all my stuff(good thing i had ear protection on). I climbed the hill(100ft) and saw the tower abouy 1 mile away(they couldnt see me because of the steep hill). About 500yds away in between me and the tower, there were three tanks lined up. Not sure if they were shooting blanks or live ammo but it definately scared the bejesus out of me.

If you want a more controlled environment, there Blacks creek rifle range. They are about 5 miles south of Boise and their range goes up to 200yds. Its a controlled range with a range master. On one side there is a pistol range that isnt controled. Theres a seperate rifle range that can be used to 400yds but ive never been able to or seen anyone use it. I think its like $8 or $10 for a day.

The best shotgun range IMO, is out in Homedale near the Oregon border. Its called Idaho Sporting Clays/Game birds. They have a piece of property with 12 stages. You pay $15 for 1 round and bring 50 shells. The throwers at each stage are changed daily so its never the same. Sometimes if youre lucky, the guys wife will cook a bunch of pulled pork sandwhiches for lunch. they dont charge, just ask for a tip. Good people out there.

And as a resident a combo fish/hunt license is really inexpensive, minus the tags and even they dont cost much. I think the sportsmans license is only about 120 and includes deer/elk/turkey/cougar and bear tags. Im not sure about steelhead though. Only need to pay extra for controlled hunts, migratory bird and federal waterfowl stamp

Wow, thanks once again. I could use help getting started hunting around here. (Looks like I will be accepted to BSU, they categorized me as an excellent candidate!!!!:D)

So I'll be sure to try and avoid the national guard, where do I go for my hunting tags and licenses? Fish and Game Office? (the only hunting I have done in CA were on a friends farm and another friends mountain/ranch place so I don't know about public land and stuff.)

Oh and thanks for the heads up about Darwin candidates. Going back to the PRK tomorrow and my stay was great here.

Sorry I cant help much on big game, something in the military always seems to come up. The WMA's (fort boise and Payette) are close to boise and good for pheasants and ducks till they freeze. Now fly fishing I can help you with.

Just hit sportsmans, cabelas, walmart etc for a license. I get mine from Idaho Angler fly shop. Great bunch of guys, they'll also help with the flyfishing but getting hunting spots out of them is hard ;).

FYI to get a resident you need to show proof of living in Idaho for 60 days I think. Last 60 days utility bills etc and a Idaho DL really helps. I dont know what they have for students from out of state though. But they will fill you in on the best way to go. And BTW dont even think of pressing the limits of the rules with F&G, they are sticklers!!!! And the F&G regs can be tough to figure out at times, especially what "zone" you are in. Cross a dirt road and you are in another zone and may not be able to use a rifle on the deer across the ravine and incure a hefty fine.

Just north of Boise about 15 miles on US55 you can visit Ponderosa Sport and Merchantile. The owner advertises as having more guns than any other in the NW. He has a Dodge sitting out front with a mounted Ma Deuce 50 cal. on the bed. And he packs two Glocks in shoulder holsters while going about his work day. Interesting guy with interesting weapons. The feds have visited him on a number of occasions only for the fact the Browning 50 is sitting out front which is not full auto.
