I collect Makarovs. I really like them for their reliability and ease of disassembly.
I also like them because it tends to piss-off some 1911 lovers.

Youll find out how many of us there are by posting the word "MAK" on a thread.

Everyone should have 2 of them to start, then they get the sickness and cant stop buying more of them.....kinda like CZ's but worse.
Shoot well.......

Fine pistol!!
Carry mine in summer, spring and fall mostly. Easy to conceal, light to carry.
Wish it was in 9mm instead of 9x18.

I like them, I had two at one time. I gave one as a gift and one I sold to my mother-in-law because of problems in her nieghborhood.

So, I am Makless for now but I respect them as a fine gun.

I've got 14, two are .380 and I'm still looking for bargains.:)

I've done a lot of non destructive testing on them, up to and including shooting full load 9mm.

The gun is hard to beat.

Fantastic gun. I have an unissued Bulgarian in 9x18.

Was a little tight when I first bought it, no failures though. Has slicked up nicely since then. I realised, with a smile, that I was breaking it in 40 years after it was made!

Between my father and I...

3 military Bulgarians
1 "hi cap"Russian
1 blued IJ 70 in 9x18
1 commercial Chinese with box 9x18
1 E.German

Unfortunately sold 380acp nickel IJ70 and commercial Arsenal Bulgarian 9x18

Still need a 380acp one of some sort and a pipe dream of mine would be to acquire a Simson Sulh.

I had never even seen one until a few minutes ago. The shop is asking $275. Is that a good price? This shop is usually pretty high.
Thanks

Depends on if it is an East German, Bulgarian or Russian. It is likely a Bulgarian - look for the circle 10 stamp. $275 is way too much for a Bulgarian.

Here are the markings to look for:

Any of these old enough to be C&R eligible?
The Makarovs were first produced in 1950. However, the ATF special list includes the Russian and East German milsurp Makarovs as being C&R eligible.
This does not include the Russian commercial IJ70's.

No wonder you weren't worried about putting 9x19 in one and testing it!:p

On Makarovs:
Great guns. I own 3 right now. 2 IJ70s standard and one hi-cap version. I'm always on the look out for more.

Too many benefits to mention, and the only sorta drawback being the 9x18mm ammo it shoots. Not a common caliber in the US but cheap enough to buy and store easily enough....so not a HUGE drawback.

Any new types being imported from Russia? Some of the new Maks look a really cool.

I always thought they were interesting, but was never really interested until I got on a kick to buy C&R pistols for a while. Along the way, I picked up an East German Mak right on this board through the trader, bought about a dozen mags for $4 each from AIM, a case of Barnual FMJ and one of those rubber wrap around grips. Now, EG maks aren't cheap, but I was quite pleased with what appeared to be a finely made gun. It has nice bluing, it's very tight and has a great trigger. However, once I took it to the range, I fell in love with it. I never thought it would be so pleasant to shoot, being small and having tiny sights. However, even with the cheap ammo, it was very accurate and the sights aren't bad at all. One of these days I'm going to have to get the whole set of one from each country.

I went to my local shop...

...and Bill behind the counter and I were talking. "I've got $300, Bill, what should I buy?"
"Two Makarovs, Steve."
Now I have five. I, too, shot full power 9mm in one of mine, and it fed and fired just fine. Not something I'd recommend, but for $140, if I wreck it, who cares?
I shoot them each time I go to the range. Careful getting trigger work done to them, as you may have weak primer strikes now and then. Mine won't work 100% with Wolf, but US made ammo is fine. Best of luck.
Steve.

I have five Maks. 2 Bulgies, 1 East German, 2 Russian Comercial (1 in .380 Satin Nickel and One 9MM Mak blued). All other are in 9MM Mak.

I carry a Bulgie on occassion.

I paid $89 for my first Pistolet Makarova.

If you wanted me to hate you, you could have simply said, "Please hate me." There was no need for you to go thru this charade of telling me what you paid and attempting to make me super envious.

Because it didn't work.

Even though I paid more for mine....

And you got yours for so much less. :barf:

Mak?

Really, with the hotter Silver Bear 115 gr ammo and nine of those stuffed in your Mak, you can't be at a disadvantage vs those that carry a snubby for CCW purposes.

I sure don't feel undergunned during the lengthy summer we have in Tx carrying my Bulgy with that type of ammo. Might go back to carrying my G19 or 1911 once "winter" comes and we're a little more layered up.

Or maybe not :D
