Any opinions on the Springfield Armory MIA ?

My wife will let me treat myself this year to a nice present..

I own 22s, shotguns and a Mosin, all of which are fine. I would like to add an American centerfire rifle to my collection. I don't hunt game but like to target shot frequently 50 - 300 yard ranges. I want an accurate gun for the longer range shots.

I have analyzed the .30 06 and .308 prices and have decided the .308 is the better way to go..

A guy at the local gun club raves about the MIA, what do you all think ?

Is there another gun you would consider if you treated yourself ?
 
It is my opinion that the M1a is the best 308 semi automatic rifle made.

This rifle is on its third barrel, with it I shot at least five National Service Rifle weeks at Camp Perry. My blood and sweat has been absorbed into the stock. It is reliable and accurate, has the best irons ever on a service rifle.

Try to find one with all GI parts, excepting the receiver and the stock.

If that's the case you might want to look at an AR-15, especially if you are worried about cost of ammo. .223 can be about half the price of .308.
 
M-1A

I have owned seven of them starting in 1979.
Hand loads, surplus, new factory ammo, not one malfunction. Not one. Ever.
The two NM rifles were extremely accurate.

I went through basic with the M-14, I have a soft spot for the M-1A.
 
I have the M1a Scout. Never had a single malfunction. It is heavier than my AR but an awesome rifle. I love it. Everyone should own at least one. Buy quality mags, you will be happier.
 
Seconded. I bought some crappy cheap plastic mags that fell out when the rifle recoiled. Got some quality metal mags after that. The price of ammo sucks, but I love my NM M1A to death. The rifle is way more accurate than I am so far.
 
I've had one for years. It's the most consistently accurate rifle I own.
Two rounds touching at 200 yards? Done that.
Three shots Under MOA at 200? Done that. (Both with Winchester 147 grain FMJ boattail overrrun bullets, not match bullets.)

Easy to reload for? Yes.
Fine rifle? You betcha!
 
It's a great rifle made by a great company. Springfield has what I call a "no BS" warrenty. If it breaks or doesn't work right you can send it back to them and they will fix it and pick up the cost to ship it to them. It should work find right out of the box but its comforting to know if it doesn't they will take care of you and you don't need to show them a receipt or any BS like that. I would not hesitate to buy one of those. You will love it. Much better IMO than an AR.
 
Go M1A you won't regret it! Great rifle to shoot. I have an AR15 too but I like to shoot the M1a better. It just feels right! I also reload for this rifle which makes it even better.

Look for a deal as prices very. I would try Gunbroker or Buds gun shop.
 
An MIA, huh? Is that missing in action? :)

I have a Springer M1A, and I like it a lot. FWIW the most accurate .308 semiauto, at an affordable price, would be one of the AR-10 types, with the DPMS being the value leader and the Armalite being a nicer gun for about 30-50% more money - still at or below the price of a basic new M1A. The M1A has a terrific feel and just really feels like a rifleman's rifle - but if I wanted to make 1" groups at 300 yards, I'd be looking at the DPMS LR-308 or Armalite AR-10 (or a Knight's SR-25 if the budget extends to 2k+).
 
I have M1A's, AR's and several mil-surp bolt guns. I enjoy all of them for target work. If money is no concern the M1A is a very nice rifle and SA's warranty is second to none. You could be the third or forth owner, they don't care, they take care of the problem if you have one. You could get into a nice AR for a little less money and they shoot very well. Mil-surp bolt guns are even less money and some are even more accurate than the M1A or AR. The Swiss K-31 Karabiner or even a newer made Lee Enfield. They are all going to cost about the same to shoot so pick one that you like, you don't need to follow the crowd.
 
They sure are nice rifles but from what I see they take a lot of work to get up to shooting well. They always run but a basic out of the box AR tends to out shoot the things.
 
Get the M1A before the wife changes her mind or something else comes up. They hold thier value if you don't like it.

Springfield's warranty is there if you have any problems.
