I met one once.
Last year, a Contra Costa sheriff's deputy was running against sheriff Warren Rupf for the office of sheriff. Deputy Scott Jacobs had been planning this for a while; he joined the force for this very reason in fact, six years prior. He has a law degree, but in California you can't run for sheriff until you've been a full-tilt cop for two years minimum. I guess he originally planned on running in '98 but didn't have the resources, so he waited another four years.
Anyways. Here it is 2002, and I *know* for a fact Rupf isn't just anti-gun (and issued less than 200 permits in a county of almost a million people), he's corrupt...there's WAY too much cross-correlation going on between Rupf's permitholders and his campaign contributors.
On the other hand, I happened to meet a guy who'd done a few months in the county jail, and was talking politics with the guy. I mentioned Steve Jacobs as the guy who's running against Rupf. The ex-jailee blanched, and described Jacobs as a "real hard-[rump]".
Hrmmmm.
So I call up Jacobsen and talk to him for over an hour...naturally, he's curious about my research and in turn, I wanna know if I can back this guy.
According to him, when he first joined the force he knew about Lott's research and was wildly keen on shall-issue CCW. But six years on the force, first in the jails and then on the streets, had convinced him California wasn't ready for widespread legal self defense. Confused, I asked him "well what about all those other states where it's worked out fine?".
Nope. He hesitated a sec, and then said it's because California is "too diverse" (exact words).
Great. Six years, first as a jailer and then as a deputy on the streets, had turned him into a racist. And his fear of legal self defense was tied STRAIGHT into the racism.
I was saddened, but not surprised. My brother used to be a process server in the SF Bay Area where this county is. The constant run-ins with "inner city thugs" of one sort or another was turning HIM into a racist...but he *knew* intellectually that was dumb, got out of that line of work and got his head clear.
Scott Jacobs wasn't that smart.
Oh, and he lost the race. Not that I gave a damn either way at that point.
