Hi all,
I want to get into rifles... I am a handgun guy. I have always liked the design of the FAL. I don't think that starting with a .308 is a mistake for a new rifle shooter... am I right? My 1st pistol was a 1911 in .45 cal and that was no problem. Anyway, I have been looking real hard at the PTR-91 (HK-91 clone - another rifle I admire) because of the price. I can get one for about $700 and I like the fact that its manufactured in the USA. Most important... it is supposedly very high quality. Quality FALs seem to cost upwards of $1200.

It seems the G3/HK-91 vs FAL debate is a popular one on these internet forums. Some dislike the controls on a G3 as compared to the FAL, but I think I can get used to either. Unfortunately, I am not in a position where I can try them both before I buy. So are there any economical quality FAL types to be had that aren't "Frankensteined" out of spare parts? Is the HK-91 clone a better value for the price? Any advice would be appreciated.

I know... I know... get 'em both :)

Thanks in advance,

FrankenFALS rock!!!

My FAL is comprised of Izzy, Aussi, Argi, Austri, Pohmy, Kraut, Yank, Braziliano, and Chiliano parts, and IT LIVES!!!

Even DSA uses "old StG spare parts", and where do you think everything but the reciever came from with the "G3 clones".

I'd try Derek of AZEX, I think he was selling 50.00 FALS for ~$800

PS - what is the slang name for someone from Brazil or Chile?

Thank you all!

Thanks for all the ideas on FALs guys... you are the best!

Thanks for the "FAL Files" suggestion. I happened onto that site once a while ago searching for FAL photos. Thay are updating it now so most of the links don't work but I can still get into the forums. Seems like the FAL has a huge following!

DSA's Stg58 just makes it under $1000 at $995... good job. Very nice looking (hopefully it works as good as it looks) and from a reputible company.

Ohio Rapid Fire was a good place to look too... thanks for the tip. They seem to have a good reputation and reasonable prices. I just may have to give them a call. It appears they are backlogged now on builds, but I'm in no rush.

I was under the impression that the PTR-91 was built in the USA on HK (foreign) equipment and not assembled from foreign parts acquired by JLD. I could be wrong though.

Once again... thanks... you guys never let a noob down!

Actually if you find a transfer dealer that doesn't mark up, you can get dealer price + your transfer fee on the DSA. Dealer price is (or at least was when I bought mine a couple of years ago) $795.

Your statement about "I hope it (the DSA) works as good as it looks"...well, I'll put the fit and finish of a DSA against ANY other FAL. The parts kit on my was definitely unissued...absolutely beautiful. The DSA receiver, you'll see if you research it, is machined from the original Steyr blueprints. Mine is gorgeous with nary a machine mark, outside or in.

I'm a DSA fan.

It will work as good as it looks, and DSA is a great comapny.

I had one issue with mine...they overtimed the barrel. I called them up, they paid to have it shipped both ways and fixed it. Sure, it might have been more impressive had they not turned the barrel a fraction of an inch too far on install, but every manufacturer is going to have an "oops" moment. DSA will stand behind their product. If its not right, they'll make it right. However, it will probably be right. They're about the best in the business.

Get the DSA! ;)
